sp wheel bearing replacement help
any tips for removing my 3tj sp front and rear wheel bearings.ive done this job lots of times but the sp wheels have me stumped.the spacer bar in between the wheels wont let me get a purchase on the back of the bearing to tap it out,the sp captive spacers dont help access either.am i missing something(other than common sense and a few brain cells) i need to get them out to get the wheels powder coated along with the frame and some other bits-cheers

Re: sp wheel bearing replacement help
is the spacer able to move at all? if it is you could try going from underneath the wheel and hitting up as there would be a bit more of a gap as the spacer dropped, but if its solid have you tried hitting the bearing inwards with a suitable drift, you might get it to 'bounce' and give you a bit of a gap as you'll probaly be replacing them anyway it wont hurt if you give em a whack!

Re: sp wheel bearing replacement help
Heat the wheel and knock the spacer sideways to give you a lip on the bearing, then drift the bearing.

Re: sp wheel bearing replacement help
Dont warm it too much, alloy has a very low melting point and once heated/cooled will become tempered and weak. What you really need is an expandable bearing extracter/slide hammer. They are about £30 to buy from Halfords/car spares but will last you a life time. Also worth investing in a bear race/seal driver set. Again about £30 but well worth it. Try Ebay, always loads for sale.

Re: sp wheel bearing replacement help
Thanks guys, all bearings now sat on my bench after being subjected to prolonged tapping and slipknot at mega volume on my cd player.my biggest problem was getting the captive spacers out as they had corroded in place, once they were out the spacer bar gave me enough room to get a purchase on the back of the bearings and i even managed to get the grease seals out in good nick so another tenner saved.just waiting for the 4dx frame to arrive and i can get them (frame s/arm/wheels) off to be blasted-progress at last!!
