Streetbike to streetstock (and then back again a day later)

The standard Cliopns with alloy tubes are about 50 grams heavier than a set of billet alloy clipons with CF tubes that I have on my project VFR.

+1 on glass with cammo, also good if you are doing adual purpose bike that you want to ride fairly quickly after an off.

Do your rearsets have fixed pegs, if not and you have the gear available to make stuff would recomed making a pair.
Between them and a set of crash bungs you can save a heap of damage in an off.

When weight saving best bang for buck is unsprung weight, front axle spacer and seal runners are an easy project if you have access to a lathe.

i fitted the front dymag to mine yesterday, and just by lifting them with the standard wheel you can feel a massive difference, i know the rear one was approx a kilo lighter but the front feels like even more. I'll try and get it to the weigh bridge next to where i work and see how the slimming programme is working :D

Spike buddy I am all for you doing this and commend you for having a ago.

But if you do go racing are you really going to ride to the track for a weekend of racing? Tent sleeping bag and tools inc?
Also if your bike is your only form of getting you to collage what happens when you crash, which you will do if you race?

My advice would be to try and find some one else in your area who is racing and ask them to help you out. What if you have a off and cant ride your bike home?
You have said that you want to spend money on "wets" but why would you risk racing in the wet if your bike is your only form of transport?
Save the money that you would spend on doing the rear wheel conversion and just use Bridgestone 090's or Alpha 10's as they will be more then ok for use on the track, I know as that is what I use.

If I was you I would not worry about doing work to your bike. I would save the money and use it for the entry fees which will be at lest £250 for a weekend racing with out the practice day. Your best bet would be to get your ACU licence and just do a few practice days. That way you can go as fast as you want to but there is no need to go balls out as you are not "racing" and there will be less chance of you having a off.

If I was you I would try and get your parents or a older mate to help you out with the transport of your bike and gear to and from the track.

Please don't take this as a slate on what you are doing I really do think it is great, but I am just worried that you will be shafted if the worst happens and you have a off. You wont have a bike to get you about and no monies to fix it.

how much is it? are you 17 or 18?

I've just turned 19, My restriction runs out in september. I've just booked the ctc thing for 1st march at cadwell. Which is pretty close to most of my family. I intend to get some track time this year and mayb race next year or even wait till year after. Depends on the money/workload.

Mallory i think is £50 ish but i don't really know as it was a present. I'm going down from leeds the night before as it is a 2 hour ride. Ready for it on the 27th feb.

no iv got a mate who has a van and awning he uses for kart racing and he said he's more than happy to drive me to races and help out while he's there (he loves all racing), i may have to ride to trackdays but hopefully not

im only doing the 17 rear to get cheep wets, part scrubbed pirrelli's through a friend (;)), il keep the 18 for my dry's as im fine with 090's at the moment, and hopefully as the first rounds il be attempting are in june and agaust i wont need to source them for a while

and im under a miles from the college and my work so if i do stack it i can just MTB it there and back or walk no problem

and im hoping to do a race weekend for about £200 being that all the rounds im looking at are at the cheeper track (still £120 entry approx) and I have access to cheep deseil (dont ask) for the van and will be living on a very tight budget.

castrol if it is indead that cheep id be quite interested, il get in touch with mallory and see if they will let me run at 17 on a restricted licence and race licence

o and a question, how long do 090's/grp10's tend to last on track? what im thinking of doing is gettting a set for track and then when there shagged putting them on for road

I got 6 track days out of my last set of 090's and that is about 12hrs of track time. If my suspension was set up like it is now I could have got more out of them.

I was pushing hard but not "race hard" the thing you will find is the faster you get and the more track time you get, you start to notice things, like less grip and stuff like that. The thing is you are going to be running at the back of the pack and having fun. So don't worry about a new set of tyres every meet.

All the stuff I am saying to you is the plans I have been making for my outings in to the world of club racing.

The only difference between me and you is about 12 years and I have got plenty of money. But I know that I am not getting in to racing to win, I am getting in to it because I have done track days to death and wont some thing more. I spend 6 months of the year out of the country so I will never get to race at every meeting. Plus I only really want to race the tracks that are close to me.

So I am building a brand new race bike that I hope to have ready for the end of this season or 2010. But it is going to be as cheap as I can make it because I know that even if I spent 10k on the bike I don't have the talent to be a top runner, I just want to have some fun.

My plan is to get to a few race meets with out my bike, ask questions and see how it all works.
I am lucky as Snett's is 20 miles from my house, so I can pop down would ever a F400 club race is going on.

yeh im getting fibreglass bodywork, so you recon standard clip ons with alloy tubes?

iv been looking at the clip ons iv got and there bloody light weight, do you recon its possible to cut and drill them to it so they clamp onto the stancion, only thing is there quite thin so would they be too weak?

well that was what bemsee and new era were quoting me for castle comb thruxton and lydden, but new era said everyone had put their fee's up almost 10% this year cos of credit crunch, those are the tracks im hoping to race, unfortunately none of them offer practise days the day before so they will all be 1 day meetings

that price dosnt include bike bits like tyres oil filter plugs etc obviously
