Streetbike to streetstock (and then back again a day later)

ok as title may suggest this is my thread for turning my road going nc30 into a streetstock/f400 race bike, the only catch is its my main form of transport so come monday morning i need it to get to college and work so im not going overboard.

the reason i am doing this is as im 17 and on a restricted licence no tracks will let me on their track days, a couple will with a race licence but it will allow me to do testing at all tracks, which was my initial plan, but im taken by the idea of getting out of the track to race for real so in the second half of the season i wana do a couple of local rounds.

first of all this is how she looks now:



and so far in terms of performance items iv fitted:

steering damper
cbr600rr brakes set (master cylinder, calipers and braided lines)
samco hoses
520 tsubaki chain and renthal sporckets (standard gearing)
carbon can
HRC brake and coolant res's

and iv got some rearsets (hrc rc45 items) and rear braided brake line that i will fit once i can get round to it,

the reason i havent fitted these items yet is because i plan to do it all in one go when i will route the brake line through the swing arm, will said swingarm with expanding foam and service the rear hub aswell as fit a brake banjo switch as there is no provision for the brake light switch on the rearsets

Iv also decided to try and make myself some clip-on's that are lighter than standard items for just £10 , I can get 22mm aluminium tube from college and a pair of plastic bungs cost £1, unfortunately the clip on parts that i planned to be cutting up have arrived and i realised they will not work (they dont clamp onto the stancion's) picture shown bellow:

so if any of you have anything that clamps onto the stancion (41mm), has a 22mm bar clamp and is alloy and is cheep Im interested (pictures would help too)

In terms of suspension im planning an rs250 rear shock (preferable with ride height adjustment) for the rear and initially just to rebuild the front forks as i am quite light (10 stone in riding full gear) which is similar to what a the suspension will have been designed to carry originaly so i have been advised to change the oil and seals etc first, then see how it is and look at uprated spring etc from there.

If the budget will stretch to wets on wheels im thinking nc23 front wheel and bros rear, as i can get the pair for around £100 and with a 17in rear i can get scrubbed wets for very cheep from a friend

Iv already sorted a front fairing, an rvf item and im planning on either an sp1 tail unit or an rs250 item, however the sp1 is depending on if a friend is going to be able to make one to fit the nc30, iv been doing a couple of designs of colour scheme's and like the one below the most, its copy of the Embassy Triumph BSS team and i think it suits the bike well.



o and one last thing i havent mentioned, Im a student that works part time and earn about £250 a month, odds of me getting to the track are sevearly stacked against me I think, but hey thats how i like it!

Have you tried Rockingham in corby, northants, you should be able to get on that track at no problem with restricted license and under 18. Book it up at http://www.hottrax.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It's such a amazing track, you will learn alot and have alot of fun there on your nc30.

didnt try rockinham actually, i was mostly trying the tracks that were more local, msv (brands), lydden hill, castle comb and thruxton

and Rockingham is way to far away for me, id be either riding to the tracks or getting a lift in my mates dads van that he is insured on for hi karting,

o yeh forgot to say

iv got a transponder, 1 piece leathers, back protector and shark fin, aswell as a filter collar from gazzahh for lock wiring the oil filter neatly

Do you have any pictures or any other info on your steering damper and is it designed for the bike or did you have to make your own mountings?

Its just i have had my fair few tank slappers now and was almost thrown off because of one, im also 17 and need some extra help with the front end when it leaves the ground then drops back down into a tanks slapper.

yeh its saved me a few times, i got it off here and its got a 41mm clamp that clamps onto the fork stancion, not sure what make it is, looks like i sprint i think but thatnks to one of the previous owners (rhoyster i think ) its got an ohlins sticker on lol, which im not complaining about lol

Mallory park are letting me do it on restricted license. Dunno how close that is to you.
Does an ACU license allow you to go to most tracks? I would have thought it would do seeing as you don't need a road license to get one/race....

id be very interested in riding mallory, infact il be out on track for the mallory park festival of 1000 bikes gona do day one in road fairings and day 2 in race fairings and may get out on a friends classic racer

mallory is about 130 miles for me so would probably be a van jobbie, when are you doing it? how much is it? are you 17 or 18?

a race licence cost £50 + for the first ear you have to do a CTC course (piece of piss im told) which is a further £50, and then you need to join a club which is another £30 approx, this allows you to do testing which is cheeper and you get more track time im told, and can also run transponders, and MSV who run brands hatch cadwell park oulton park and snetterton will let you do track days but only when you 18, + of course you can race.

I fitted alloy tubes and end plugs to the standard vfr clipons, all the weight is in the bar and endweight.

Pair of standard clipons, standard bars and end weights = 1416 grams
Pair of standard clipons, alloy tubes and plastic plugs = 556 grams

wow that a fair bit saved, still i fancy making myself something (got the resources so may aswell use them while i do), and the standard clip ons are still quite beefy so i recn as fari bit could be saved for little cost

The std (aluminium?) clip ons are very light, it's the steel bars that weigh a lot. The std clip ons restrict the bar positions available, but they're no too bad.

Best single weight saving you can make IMHO is fitting fibreglass bodywork.
