Fitting an Rvf400 engine into an Nc30

Evening all. I have a very nice Rvf400 engine (low miles and very smooth) which I am tempted to fit into my Nc30, am I right in thinking that I would need the Rvf wiring loom and Cdi, otherwise is it a straight swap? Do I need to use the Rvf coils? It's not really a problem as I have virtually a complete Rvf at my disposal. To be honest there isn't really anything wrong with what I already have but it seems like too good an opportunity to pass up. The biggest problem I can see is having to grovel to my mate to re-wire the cbr600rr clocks again, but it would mean that my nc30 loom would be available if anyone else wanted a cbr600rr clockset for their nc30. Any help would be much appreciated.

is there not an extra mounting point on the nc30 frame which isn't used on the rvf frame,and i think i'm right in saying all you have to do it tap some threads into the cases of the rvf motor and your all set on using all the mounting points on the nc30 frame

you will need the rvf cdi and loom and there are differance in the clocks also,a hell of a lot of hassle for not much gain from my understanding of it all

Cheers Rhory, the work involved in fitting the engine isn't really a problem considering how many times I've stripped down and rebuilt and redesigned this bike. The intention is to build the best possible bike I can and once I've finished putting it back together this time I intend on leaving it alone as much as possible (wishful thinking perhaps) as I have a new project on the horizon.

Engine goes straight in no taping needed, the frame on RVF pics up different mounts but RVF motor will go straight in.
Electrics is the nightmare, need to match the pics ups to which ever loom and ignition you are using, but to get best out of RVF motor you will need RVF loom and pic ups, and look forward to some graft.

Thanks Aly, it's reassuring to hear from someone who has carried this conversion out. Just out of interest what were your reasons for choosing the Rvf lump? I appreciate yours is a race bike where as mine will be for the road. I just like the idea of a newer motor with fewer miles in good condition and seeing how all the bits are sat in my shed next to my bike it's all too tempting.

RVF makes lots more power once fettled End of!!

I like to stick to the but some other makes of bike there are easier and cheaper ways to get more power but dont stick to the This was best way to get a NC30 upto speed for the championship it was raced in last year.
Was not me that did the convertion on this bike but I have done 2 others before.

I put an rvf engine in my '30 racebike when I accidentally blew the old '30 engine up (rod out the block!)

You need to tap two M10x1.25 (fine) threads in holes in the engine, pretty basic.

Easiest also to get the rvf loom (and cdi), you also need the rvf tacho the '30 tacho won't work.


If you're changing the engine, it's not much extra hassle.

Thanks for all the replies, the tacho thing may actually work in my favour as my electrician had said to me that he felt the cbr600rr clock conversion would have been more straight forward with an Rvf electrical system (don't ask me why it's all over my head - something to do with the types of signals sent by the cdi with the rvf item being closely related to the cbr600rr, or something). I'll have to have a decent look tommorow - providing I don't end up in ikea all day (deep joy, well maybe not then eh?!) but so far there doesn't seem to be too many issues (I'll regret saying that). Rhory, the family still live there so it stands a good chance, besides there are too many places I want to visit on the bike in the North.
