Oh, that's all I need...(Alternator?!)

Post by mattUKNC »

Hi All,
As it was nice out this morning, I thought I'd take the NC into work. Started fine and ran it to the patrol station to fill up, tried to start the bike and...nothing.
On pressing the start button, all I was getting was a 'tick-tick' from the starter solenoid. Dash lights on fine.
Called Mr AA and it jumps straight away, he prodded around a few bits with his meter and came back with "Your alternator is knackered, oh, and your battery doesn't look like it's holding a charge!".
Great I thought.

Any ideas on prices and where best to source an alternator and/or battery?

Also, I did find another post about poor running and checking the alternator, but mine was running sweet. I'll try the other suggestions on checking the alternator over Christmas though.

Merry Christmas All!! :D

I'd go with reg/rec first. That's the easiest thing to change and also why your bike isn't eeping a charge.

Thank VB I was going to probably go for the whole kit and kaboodle(sp?!), Reg/Rec, battery and alternator!
(Although it had a new battery and Reg/Rec last October!)

best check for the alternator is how much voltage is it putting out......

to check this you need to disconnect the block connector by your right knee,it's the one with the three yellow wires.you want to test the side that comes from the alternator.

with a multmeter set to ac volts take three seperate readings from the connector with the bike idling @5000rpm

the readings should all be the same and at least 50 volts...if any different or below 50v then the alternator is faulty.

also, charge your battery fully up and get the bike started and test what the voltage is at the battery terminals with the bike idling@5000rpm.....it should be between 13.5-15volts.this test should be done with a multimeter set to dc volts.

you definately have a charging problem, but it is better to determine what is wrong first which could save you a bit of cash in the long run.

The AA guy showed this bit, it was sat around 12.4 (hovering) but then dipped to 9.4v (approx.) when the throttle was blipped upto 5k or so. No idea what that means myself, but it didn't look good. :D

I'll get my meter out at the weekend me thinks...

when you blip the throttle the voltage should rise as its getting a charge, but if it stays the same or starts to go down then this means your charge system is not working.

to me,this could be the first sign of a gubbed reg rec as usually which was my case when the alternator was goosed it still gives out enough voltage to give a slight charge.

i would do the alternator test first and if it comes up trumps then i would definately consider replacing the reg rec.
