Re: horrible top end loud ticking noise
Had the same problem on the engine i just rebuilt, sound would only start once engine up to operating temp, and would only be noticeable at idle.. I didnt notice any signs of damage to pistons, head or valves so it isnt a mechanical knocking of these, but more likely caused by weak valve spring causing a tap between the top of the valve and the rocker on return.. Could also have been excessive clearance on big end bearing, one of mine was quite scuffed and as i havent finished puttin engine back together i cant say for sure if any of the above is the cause.. The sound got progressively louder on mine so i think it is something to have looked at eventually, but il let you know once my engine bak 2gether if i cured the cause

Re: horrible top end loud ticking noise
It is pretty normal on these engines.
It's more noticeable at high temps at idle (e.g. more than a couple of minutes), I've had it on all my nc's, even after valves have been adjusted.
Get on it and enjoy!!

Yes this guy is right. this is normal. I've had 3 NC30's and they all have this even with good valve clearances and off clearances. Also, I've got a fair few NC30 mates, including RVF400 and they all have that top end ticking sound.Stickshift wrote:It is pretty normal on these engines.

I once heard some guy explain what this is and i think it's something to do with a small gear around the camshafts that when worn to a certain point just makes a sound.. I think something called a scissor gear? Anyway, it's that. Maybe it just gets worn or something after a point where it then produces the noise... because there are SOME bikes that don't yet do it...
Get on that thing and ride it!!!
