Well, I'm still stumped. There's continuity at the sidelight plugs and at the gauge cluster bulb sockets, no power though. I rechecked the ground, double checked all connectors. I also noticed that the taillights are only lit when the brakes are on. On the wiring diagram it runs to the handlebar switch and is also on the same circuit with the cluster lights and sidelights, so I'll be checking there next. I bought the specified bulbs, but it doesn't fit the socket. The odyssey continues.

Do you measure 12v at each lamp connector.

He said continuity but no voltage ;)

Sounds like it may be a knackered switchgear.

He said "continuity at the sidelight plugs and at the gauge cluster bulb sockets no voltage", no voltage relative to where, sockets or ground. Tail lights that only lite when brakes are on suggests a ground problem.

But is it actually the tail light lighting up? Don't forget that they are twin filament bulbs in the same unit and you wouldn't be able to see the lower wattage tail light when the high wattage brake lamp is illuminated.

I am aware that the stop/tail lamps are dual filament but we can only offer assistance based on the information provided. Glad you have decided to provide all future assistance.

I haven't had much time to mess with it recently, thus the lack of updates. I did start to pull apart the handlebar switch housing. The tail light only light up when the brake switch is engaged, no running lights.

I've still made no progress. Looking at the wiring diagram it seems fairly simple. Translating that to the wiring harness with all the plugs and such is where I start to get lost. What's odd is there isn't a brown/white wire to the cluster or taillights (same circuit). I broke down and ordered a knock off switch unit from China on eBay. With shipping it was $35, so I'm really hoping thats the issue. I'll tear apart the old one on the meantime.

So my Chineseum switch arrived today, plugged it right into the harness...and the light all came on! Good call MadMoto! It looks cheap, but it works. The old switch housing is very sun damaged. I may try to restore it in the future and swap the internals over.

A tip to restore sun bleached plastic, wipe them in old engine oil. The reason they fade and go brittle is the oil content evaporating.
