NC35 sump cracked
Well, it happened. Looking for some advice around replacing it.
Looking for some advice around replacing it.
Plan is to:
1) source a new sump and a new gasket
2) remove the oil
3) remove the oil sump bolts and sump
4) slap in the new sump and gasket
5) tighten bolts
6) refill oil.
Am I missing anything? Like removing the exhaust?

Re: NC35 sump cracked
The exhaust will need to come off otherwise you can't drop the sump down far enough to clear the oil pump

Depending on whether it has been removed before or not they can be pretty welded on. Fear not though - there are no dowel pins in the sump so a few blows to the side with a soft faced mallet and it'll come right off.

Re: NC35 sump cracked
For info - a sump often cracks when the copper washer gets squished and creeps up the bolt - this then splits the sump when the bolt is next tightened. Replace the copper washer. They are 2p. A sump case is a lot more.

Re: NC35 sump cracked
For those interested or in the same situation.
Pipes do need to get dropped to replace sump.
Replacing the sump is pretty easy once the exhaust system is out. A few bolts and it drops down.
There is not enough clearance to drop the sump without removing the pipes due to the oil pump filter.
Gave me a good opportunity to inspect things inside and see what get caught in the oil filter.
I slapped a new one back on with a OEM gasket.
Problems solved.

Glad you got it changed now.newtothis wrote:The exhaust will need to come off otherwise you can't drop the sump down far enough to clear the oil pump
I'd broken a few sump pan bolts before when torquiing up or looseing them, and they often give without any warning...
apart from that as you said it's pretty straight forwards.
While you have the sump off it's always a good idea to check nothing weird is building up on the oil strainer for the pump.
