Setting valve clearance

Hi guys, just wondered is there any other way of setting valve clearances without removing the cover on right hand side of nc30, as my cover is seized and now rounded off?
Can I get camshaft a in correct positions without guide that this cover hides. An explanation of procedure would be most helpful??

Not really, the timing marks are beneath that cover.

Get creative and get that cover off!

If you stick the bike in gear and rotate the rear wheel by hand, you can use the timing marks on the cams. When both point straight up or straight down and both lobes are off the valves, you can get the feeler gauges in to measure your clearances, and slide the lifters out of the way if necessary.

good call, since the cams are gear driven you dont have to worry about chain stretch or things going out of alignment (of course assuming they are in properly anyway)

Be careful not to rotate the engine without cams in it if yuo remove them all as you might loose your timing.

Ive seen a few of those caps that have been rounded out by poorly fitting sockets... worst one I had to use a punch to drift it round, others ive cut big slots in and used screwdrives / drifts to get them off.

You can get a replacement cap if you ruin it just be careful with the acutal eninge case itself.

Hi all, many thanks for the replies, particularly getting the valve clearances without the timing marks on the cover!!
I've tried soaking cover on both sides with plus gas and have tried drifting the timing cover with a drift/chisel and it hadn't budged, some plonker must have really tightened it up far too tight!!
I have been offered a complete case by a forum member and am awaiting a reply from a chap at the nc30 club website he may be able to supply a timing cover on its own.
Just need to be careful I don't damage the clutch casing!!!

I've just done this very thing. Malc is correct. I didn't bother with the cam timing marks. I just made sure the lobes were facing away from the valves. The radius of the camshaft is constant until you get to the ramps of the lobes.
