Nc24 swing arm on Nc21

Post by watafu »

Hi, currently fitting an nc24 swing arm to an nc21 frame. The only issue I have come across (bar aligning the swingarm to get the bolts in) is that there is a nice gap on the right hand between the swing arm and frame. Is there normally a spacer here that I'm missing or am I trying something very silly that shouldn't be done?? Any help appreciated.
Also planning on putting the nc24 rear bodywork and seat on so I presume I'll need the subframe from the 24 and a new exhaust + hanger + footrests??

the frames are the same so if its not fitting your missing something.

the bodywork and footpegs are interchangable as is the subframe.

however, the exhaust is lowlevel on the 21 and highlevel on the nc24, the hanger being part of the subframe on the nc24 and nc21 its part of the rear pegs if my mind servves me well.

if your keepign the nc21 low level exhaust then youll need to keep nc21 pegs on whatever subframe as they are part of the exhaust hanger. obv if your using the nc24 exhaust you need the nc24 subframe to hang it, (or get creative with a hanger) anyhow..

the bodywork should bolt right onto either fram, its all the same apart from the seat.. even then you can put the nc21 seat on the nc24 no trobule.. i did this for a comfy 2 up seat. the nc24 seat sucks for passangers.

goto cmsnl.com and search for vfr400r and you can get the microfiches for the nc24 see if your missing parts

Excellent, thanks for clearing that up, yea it appears I am missing some spacers by the looks of things, about 3mm gap on both sides of the swing arm. Will probably just order the whole section that bolts the swing arm on as they look worn anyway and the dust seals are wrecked.
Might end up doing something a little different with the exhaust now, more akin to the er6 type underslung. Will see when I get around to sorting that out as its pretty low priority now, gotta derust, clean and spray a lot of parts. One other thing, the engine bolts will not budge at all, tried a monster of a breaker bar with another on the end with little effect. Don't want to round them off as I need to get this engine off to double check and overhaul the exhaust system. Guessing the usual pb blaster type solution and a blowtorch and impact wrench (tried this with no effect either =/) are my only options?

you'll snap them if your not careful.

if they are really in there, and ive seen a few nc24s / nc21s like that then id apply a lot of plus gas for a few days, get them hot hot hot and use a proper rattle gun, electric or air.

only downside to the 21.24 is that even though its a good motor, becuase of the frame and suspension and tyre choice, unles you spend seriously lots of money its never gonna ride as well as a stock nc30 will

Ok ideal, got the bolts soaking in plusgas as I type this. Yea thats why I stopped and didn't put too much pressure on with the extended breaker bar, had that happen to me before and its a pig to sort out. Cheers for the heads up there. Yea its a shame really, not looking to spend silly money just slightly upgrade the current ride, uprated front springs is about as far as I will go on the front end I reckon, gets too expensive for very little reward.
Now when I rebuild my nc30 which is why I need to get this bike on the road, then I will spend a good amount overhauling the suspension and doing a full engine and exhaust rebuild

So what was the result of the change? can you post photos, i am really curious. I am planning on doing the same thing on my nc21. I was wondering if the swing arm of the vfr750 would fit in? (single sided one)
