Nc30 headlights

Hi all, I like everybody else love riding my nc30 but night riding can be worrying sometimes as the headlights aren't very bright as I'm sure you know so my question is can you upgrade the bulbs to 55w? If you can get them to fit as the fitment for the jap h4 bulb is slightly different to the UK h4.

I'm sure they would be some wiring to change etc but I need a bit of direction. Any help appreciated.

55/60W H4 globes can be fitted to tne OEM headlight shells with a minor mod to globe bases but a relay will need to be added to the low beam circuit, similar to that already fitted to the high beam. Best practice is to rewire both the low and high beam circuits directly from the battery.

There is a document in the website Library that describes how to add the relay. If you are still unsure then online assistance will I am sure be provided.

I did it for my NC35 - which had been running 55/60 H4 bulbs when I got - but with the stock wiring I was getting 10V at the bulb - now I am getting 14V when riding.

I only did the low beam though.

Was quite simple - took some 13A mains cable - wired one to earth and the other to live directly on the battery.
Put an inline fuse close to the battery on the live wire. Routed the cabling (this took the longest!) to the front of the bike.

Snipped off the wires to the bulb sockets that fed the low beam and earth. Soldered the new earth in place. Soldered from the switched side of the relay to the live wire on the plug sockets. Soldered to the live/switched side of the relay the live from the battery.

For providing the power to switch - I took a wire from the old headlight live wire and the old headlight earth and put them across the switching part of the relay - so now whenever the lights would have been on then they switch the relay on, which in turn power the headlights.

Yep I followed the document on here as well and did it :-) you can get those bulbs here, don't have to order the expensive ones from Japan! (Also good excuse to buy a cheap soldering iron)

Just wondering if LED H4's would be any good? They use less power than a standard H4 so shouldn't overload the wiring?

Not road legal. Also - the wiring isn't difficult to do. Where are you based?

if you buy a DECENT LED H4 that gives out proper light and in the correct pattern they are very expensive.. I saw a set for 130gbp the other day in H4 fitment in my local bike shop.. not sure how legal they are in various countries but if oyu buy cheap you just waste your money, good ones have a lot of heatsink fins and separate power supplies.

the relay mod is the best way to go to get a reliable beam, the wiring doesnt overheat, just the swithc contacts which are not upto the job, the UK bike that came with h4 as stock had the extra relay, it wasnt needed on the JDM bikea s the bulbs were lower watteage.

Stock wiring is adequate for the job

if you want to get super-serious you can replace the positive feed to the relay and then to the lights with 2.00mm sq wire (with inline fuse) and use the original harness just for controlling the relay (milliamps curent).

i did this with my nc30 and good h4s, nightbreakers were a lot brighter with good wire to them... stock wire is often adequare but undersized.. the slight voltage drop gives a dimmer builb but longer bulb life.
