NC30 Shock linkage needle bearing modification

Post by SmallFrowne »

Before I do something silly, can someone just give me the thumbs up (or down) on this.

I have an NC30 triangle linkage with a rubber bush. I'd like to upgrade it for a needle roller a la nc35, the parts numbers for it are:
91071-MY1-005 - Needle Race (17×24×17)
52465-MY1-000 - Pivot Pin
91262-KV3-831 - Dust Seal (17×24×5) x2

Which will cost about £25-30 (for those interested). ~£15 of which is for the bearing - standard bearing suppliers don't seem to stock this size, so looks like I'll be buying one in a red bag.

I will need to press the old bush out, get the hole drilled/bored out to 24mm and then press the needle bearing in, grease up, seals on, and pivot pin in.

Kind of the reason I'm asking for clarification is that when doing a search I get results that take me to http://x-files.serveftp.com/harkermatic ... cker%20Arm but the link is broken. So it might be nice for someone who has done it to say something like "Yes, just get it done and stop whittling on, it's not rocket science".

But also I'll be enlisting the help of a friend with a big drill and a lathe, I've not done this kind of work (drilling holes for bearings) before, will I just need to take a 24mm drill bit to it? How best to ensure a good fit? - because that sounds too easy and nothing is ever easy. Cheers, Paul.

Yes, that's it. Use some good oil for smear to keep some linkage cool while drilling to 24mm.

I would suggest that you set the rocker up in a suitable jig and precision bore it on a mill - just whacking a 24mm drill through it will be distinctly hit or miss as regards your chances of the hole being dead parallel to the other two and/or getting an acceptable bearing fit.

Funny you should say that, the friend of mine came to same conclusion and recommended somebody else who has a miller. I knew it'd be too easy.
