R6 Exup End Can works with 3EN1 Stainless System

Post by Clanky »

Hi,

Just a quick update. I bought some Black Widow (Sandy Bike Spares) stainless headers. Without the exup the bike was a bit down on power throughout the range especially low and mid ranges. It ran lean and needed to be enrichened and below 5000 rpm (around town) it was a bit stumbly and boggy, not un-rideable but I needed to feather the clutch more to compensate. It also needed more choke than usual and the idle was a bit crap until the bike warmed up.

Today I added an R6 end can (with the exup installed) and used the R6 control cables to link it up to the FZR exup servo. Only real mods needed were an exhaust adaptor and a home made bracket to hang the end can.

The default position on the R6 exup is fully open when the engine is off. The FZR exup is closed when the engine is off so you need to bear that in mind when adjusting the cables.

Result after a test run today was a total success. It starts first go and idles nicely. The stumble has gone and the bike has it's oomph back. Pulls nicely all through the rev range. The exhaust is a lot louder but other than that I can't see any downsides.

Need to play with the mixture again as it's probably a bit too rich now but so far so good :sshh:

Hi Mate, would you not reccomend the Black Widow system? Was looking at getting one for my 3en1 track bike build

Hello,

I'll add some photos soon but I have an issue with Photobucket and can't copy the links. I'll try and sort it out tomorrow.

The exhaust from Sandy was fine and fitted easily. The quality seems good and it is 2 kg lighter than the original. I'm sure a straight through exhaust with no exup is recommended for track bikes because it gives you more power at the top end while sacrificing low end torque, which for a track bike is no loss. The exhaust was £250 but ebay had a deal with 20% off so I got it for £200. Either way its good value.

The only thing I have noticed is that the exup does not always do the pre start cycle when the ignition is turned on (that whoop whoop noise where the valve opens then closes). I really don't think it makes any odds and I'm happy to live with it like that.

The interesting bit for me is that we could use a higher spec system like a proper 4:2:1 and cut the exup off the R6 can ... maybe.
That standard can might look better with the end cap re-riveted the other way up

I found it hard to visualise the angle of the can in relation to the rear of the bike from the pics.

However ;well done on the groundwork with this.

I think a short angled link pipe and the end can inverted would get the can back to near where the original was positioned.

Older bikes don't suit the MotoGP style of can placement.

One thing has come from your work, and that is to carry forward the theory that a few have had but just not put it into practice.
R&D at its best.

The can hanger is spot welded to the can though, that's why I think turning the end cap 180 degrees would work better

Yes I see what you mean Boris.

The end cap rotation would indeed tidy the installation...I do think it needs a short link pipe though.
