Reg/Rec question

Given how poor they are supposed to be - can they handle extra load?

Mine has a replacement non oem reg/rec - but I don't want to burn it out - would it cope with heated grips?

The stator is what generates the power, it is 350watt stator, so in theory if your battery is in good condition then yes it can supply enough power to run heated grips.

The regulator / rectifier unit is the convert the 3 phase AC voltage from the stator into DC and then and then to dispose of any extra power that isnt needed by the bike.

The OEM unit is simply adequate, it has no cooling fins and uses the subframe as a heatsink.

A poor battery that can't take charge well is a big killer of the original reg.rec, as is corrison in the connectors, causing an extra load on the stator and burning that out too.

I've seen a few NC30s still on their original reg/recs and stators.

To achieve this you want to change the battery every 2-3 years before its old and past its best, never let the battery get too low charged (as per Honda common service manual, stock system is designed to maintain a full battery not charge a dead one, bump starting etc can overload duty cycle of stator).

Make sure stator connections are corrosion free.

Modern units like the R6 etc are same design shunt type but can take a lot more abuse and disssapate a lot more heat before dying.

Then you have another option of modern switching reg/recs, these generate far less heat than the older type of reg/rec so you dont have to worry so much about heat.

As long as your grips dont have super high current draw your stator shoudl be able to supply enough power

I'll get a pic when I can when ... I used an ally plate to raise the larger reg rec over the two pressed ribs on the subframe, I was going to use heat synk compound with the original reg reec years ago and tried to get some from a mate who builds pc's and he said to me he hadn't seen that stuff for years

I don't know where he's looking; I picked some up just a few years ago when I was modifying some mountain bike LED lights. Arctic Silver or something like that. Massively expensive, but does the job.
