Vfr400 9000Rpm rev limit

Hi all, just bought a vfr400 that rev limits at 9000Rpm, Has a Chinese Cdi, Rest seems stock, My money is on shoddy chinese crap, suggestions?

No, no, A solid Rev limit, on an Australian bikes, we Don't have restrictions Like you guys in the uk, An ignition cut, Not a restriction

We don't have restrictions in the UK either...but the Japanese do...and your CDI might be mimicking that...

Japanese bikes are speed limited, not rev limited. Well, not rev limited in the range before any useable power is made anyway... :whistle:

I'd put a couple pounds on it being the cheap shite Chinese copy CDI.

I thought that the Jap bikes limited the speed by cutting the spark at 8 to 9k....

Nope, if you remove the speedo, the spark cuts at 5K. If you haven't removed the speed restriction, that cuts in at 180kmh. In both cases it's simply a matter of one of the coil packs being disabled.

Not aware of any Australian version of the NC30, only Japanese imports, that have a speed restriction of 180km/h at which point the ignition signal to the rear cylinders is removed. If the speed detection circuit, located in the speedometer fails or the speedometer is removed then the 5000 rpm limiter cuts in from the moment that the engine is started. Never hit any inbuilt max rpm limiter but then never been higher than 14,000 rpm, one of the race boys should be able to provide a max rpm limiter figure if one exists. aky141, from your comments it could be assumed you are oz located, if so have spare OEM ignition unit you could try to confirm ignition unit as source of problem and thus avoid any unnecessary replacement costs.

I think stock rev limiter is set to 14500, have you never missed a gear and had it bouncing off the rev limiter before, or not changed quick enough in the low gears during some heated riding?
