Checking timing advance - sprayed with oil..
I was going to check my timing advance, but with the plug removed there's a lot of air being blown out of the crankcase. At worked at idle but when I revved the engine a bit I got showered in oil mist... luckily I had the goggles on!
Is it normal to have so much overpressure in the crankcase or do I have a blown ring or something?

Hi, I've never checked the timing on a nc30 (never had to, they usually work or they don't unless you have a adjustable ignition), but my klr600 does the same when I checked that.

Re: Checking timing advance - sprayed with oil..
Ok, sucks if that's normal. Kinda hard to check timing when you're being sprayed with oil...
The reason I'm doing it because I want to measure the stock ignition advance curve so I can transfer it to my MicroSquirt as a starting point...
From what I could see through all the oil, it very quickly advanced off idle and by maybe 7k it was at full advance. The haynes manual says full advance is "35-37 BTDC @ 12k" but of course it does not specifically say when full advance is attained...

There are a few threads about igntiion boxes on the forum. Rick Oliver supplies an ignitech box and has various different mappings for it, perhaps he and a few others will be able to supply the information you need without you having to take an oil shower.lutorm wrote:Ok, sucks if that's normal. Honda service manual says:
Ignition timing "f" mark 18 degrees BTDC at 1200 rpm
Advance starts 1800 +/- 200 rpm
Advance stops 12000 +/- 200 rpm
Fully advance 37 +/- 2 degrees at 12000 rpm
