Upsizing Diameter of Exhaust

Post by thegeekuk »

Hey, I have just purchased for a reasonable price an excellent Yoshimura end pipe, and like many I have also had to get new downpipes for my NC29, which have been fitted and seem to be bedding in well, although there is that slightly annoying waspy rattle at low revs, sounds like something loose, but this seems to be something we have to live with from reading around, my original ones were rusted through and already sounded like a JCB, so I had little choice but to replace them. So I am coming from a low place anyway.

My main question is though the Yoshimura Slide on can came from a CBR600 which has a wider exhaust diameter and I wondered what kind of impact this would have on my performance and if I should

a: just add a 51.5mm Inside Diameter gasket to the current exhaust and then use an exhaust clamp to secure it? Possibly Wrap the join as well?
b: Just change the exhaust to the correct size and then not mess with it as mentioned in 'a'
c: Don't bother with either? Get another Slide on Can that fits the 51.1mm exhaust?

BTW I put the Yoshimura can on and it looked amazing, and sounded like a hell cat, but it was not correctly attached and I would like to know the impact on my power.

Currently stock can is back on as I freaked out and didnt want to run it sounding like I was a mobile ASBO waiting to happen.

And then I would have to speak with you again Mark!!!!!

I would have a look at a graphite exhaust gasket from something like a Hornet and go for a stainless clamp.

As for the rattle, it sounded fine to me. Even with your massive rev as you pulled away ;)

Well thanks for the heads up, and a brilliant way to meet a fellow owner, thought you would appreciate a blip from the new downpipes.

Got the can fitted, Motorcycle Giant over in Shepherds Bush nailed it, and also fitted new tyres, so going super strong now.

Sounds like thunder :P

For now Motorcycle Giant have managed to fit it and the power delivery seems improved if anything, and its sounds great. But yeah I think next stage once the respray has happened and cosmetics become more of an issue a new link pipe custom made would be the logical step, thanks Benny.

The Welsh mountains with my brother this weekend and my new Bridgestones will get tested and I will report back.

They did indeed manage to get it on and it sounds so good and seems to have a bit more mid range punch as well....so all in all happy with the mod. Taking it to a friends garage this week to strip the fairing to go to the shop to get a total respray of all panels. So its a step closer to how I want her to look for summer.

Also they added some Bridgestone Battle-axe's which are also superb.

Here she is whilst on our trip to Wales this weekend
