Nc30 all electrics die when hot
Hi,
My 14yr sitting in a shed bike is back on the road and running well...with the exception today when I was about 15min into my ride and bike was up to temp, bike just completely died - lights, ignition, dash, everything. It was dark so pulled over, checked all fuses, battery leads and grounds which look good, manage to flag a car down who kindly drops me off home. Just been back 2h later and she is all go no issues.
So sounds like an earth or electrical prob that comes up when hot? I've previously had it up to temp and fan going, and once it did a similar thing I think, but it was in the shed and it started 5 min later when if checked everything (and it had prob cooked down).
So where should I start and what could be wrong? Don't want to get stuck somewhere again!

Re: Nc30 all electrics die when hot
Hi, just gone out and figured out it dies when high beam is engaged for more than a second. I checked the bulbs, left is standard 60/35, right is h4 60/55....would this explain my problem? My lh switchgear does appear to be aftermarket I think, so would this be able to hold up to the increased load? I assume I should do the h4 relay mod thing?

Mine does the same thing however not instantly. You know what my cause was as you helped me! You done any multimeter checks?

Would recommend adding a relay to the low beam circuit. Aftermarket switchgear not likely to be any better than oem and when you eventually have to replace the 35/60W bulb with another 55/60W, the resulting load will likely be more than the switch can bare.
High beam circuit should have a relay fitted as standard. Unplug the headlights and try operating high beam switch. If no issue reconnect one headlight and then operate highbeam switch. Still no issue, reconnect other headlight and operate highbeam switch. At some point your problem should appear and then you can investigare the source of the excessive electrical load.
You should also measure the battery voltage during these tests.

Hi, thank you, crook - your issue was rr plug yeah? I've had a bike die due to rr not being connected and it's a little different - this very much feels like a short or wire coming loose/blowing. I've just checked it again 6h later and I don't have power back..battery is at 12.8v though so not battery related anyway :-). Heading away now so will have to check tonight, I'm thinking fairings off and check lh switchgear, plugs behind instruments and down to where they connect to the loom, as well as fuses again... I can't figure out why (when the high beam circuit is designed to have that wattage bulb) te bike would die on high beam, unless am I right in that it's because both circuits are on at the same time? (Maybe an issue with my switchgear?) I don't have a known good one to try right now, what can I test without power/how do I test?

Re: Nc30 all electrics die when hot
Anyone with ideas where to start? Have tested new switchgear in it, no go. Looked at wiring diagram trying to figure out what is needed for power to the dash but I get confused at the cdi - can anyone tell me how it goes from battery-30a main fuse etc so I can go from bit to bit checking continuity?

Checked main switch works - get no continuity when off, continuity when on, and checked with a known good oem switch as well...if fuses are good, battery good, and ignition is good, shouldn't I get something from the dash? Do I need cdi, is it this that could have gone?

first things first are the battery and reg known good parts? Ie you've tested them. If there good id start checking wiring hasn't gone brittle and broken over time and the earth points haven't gone manky from the years in storage.

Battery is new and has been cranking fine the last 2 months I've had it. Reg rec is off my other bike and also known good. Checked charging just before is set off and battery voltage was 12.8, charging at 14.2 or so.
Am I right in saying there are two earth points - front left frame and then left middle? Have visually inspected an checked bolt tightness on both - I assume I check continuity with the -ve terminal of battery yeah? Thank you :-)

Re: Nc30 all electrics die when hot
If your earlier post is accurate regarding symptoms ie high-beam on causes engine to stop, why have you not attempted to isolate the sections of the high-beam circuitry as I suggested in my post. Have the symptoms changed.
