NC24 Gearbox

Post by EvanTate »

Hi guys,

So I've stripped my bike down to do some work on her to get her roadworthy. I had been wondering about the condition of the bearing and bores for a while since I am not the first owner so while the motor was out I decide to open her up and have a look. Not a single speck of gasket maker anywhere so I am thinking that it is the first time she's even had the motor opened  Also, the bearings and rings are in amazing condition for a 25yr old bike and by my educated guess are not even halfway through their life span. Uber lucky

Anyway, back on topic... I have had an issue since I've had the bike where every now and then it will pop out of 2nd gear into neutral (neutral light illuminates), and also sometimes (less frequently) it pops out of 5th and seems to hang between gears in neutral (no light). It hasn't been bad enough for me to stress about it but while she's open I'd like to check it out and hopefully sort it out.

Now, I know nothing about bike gearboxes (or gearboxes in general tbh) so I'm not sure what to be looking for. I understand the concept of how they work but I do not see anything that is obviously worn out or damaged. So does anybody have any experience with this who could advise me on where to start looking?

Thanks :peace:

The places to look for wear are on the engagement dogs on the gear themselves(small square sticky out bits)these get rounded of and make it slip out of gear.also the selector forks wear on the ends.making gear changing difficult.a manual would be a good start but not around easily for a 24.although a nc30 gearbox will be the same (in princable)so look at the haynes book of lies!!.

If it seems shot, Ive got a shot engine but the gearbox worked fine when I used it. :)
