New owner, pulling down RVF for the first time
Hey guys, I'm looking to get my RVF on the dyno to be professionally tuned in a few weeks. Before I do I'd like to pull it down and make sure everthing's as it should, as well as take care of any maintenance job the dyno operator would have done. I'm plenty handy with injected cars but have never worked on a bike or carbies before. Regular road driven bike with straight through exhaust.
I was planning on doing http://www.400greybike.com/files/NC30%2 ... 0Guide.pdf including drilling & washers, syncing the throttle bodies, plugs, air filter and maybe some air box mods. Few questions please:
- How much of that VFR guide will not apply to my RVF?
- A few tuners have advised me to be potentially concerned for old and warped emulsion tubes, is this common? If so I'd prefer to simply order new ones now - where's the best place to go?
- Any guides on how to modify the air box exactly?
- Any other recommendations for maintenance/mods while I'm there?

You;ll find loads of information on the bike and sorting it out.
A few standouts from your post
Don't touch the slides, the drilling of them is for NC30 only. If anything, get the NC35 HRC kit from Rick Oliver (a member on here) and the slide springs in there will do the same job as the drilling is expected to do.
leave the airbox alone.
Set it up as standard as you can for starters as to change a lot and then try to chase an issue is a total pain in the arse.
get the exhaust on (full/half or just a can??)
get the carbs clean, floats set and balanced.
plugs are weak
new carb rubbers will allow for easy fitment and removal of the carbs - worth the investment as there is a knack to fit them otherwise.

Good to hear about not worrying about the slides or air box and I'll definitely chase up that member. I've read conflicting reports on the air box thing - some people say it hurts drive ability.
The exahust will be a straight through shorty pipe that I'm planning cutting and shutting the OEM headers to suit. Honestly can't justify getting extractors with it.

If you get the HRC 35 kit from Rick it comes with the emulsion tubes springs and needles so your good to go!

It is Yamahas that oval their tubes :)
I;d also counsel against a shorty pipe - they work lovely with longer cans.
By "cutting and shutting" the headers - what do you mean? Just the end can or some wholesale chopping?

Ah, cheers Skinnydog. Just found a pic and his website for the order.
I like the styling of a shorty pipe - no plumbing and fat muffler distracting from the lines of the tail. I'll have to move the merge points of the factory headers further in to allow for the pipe to be lashed on closer to the motor, thus exiting lower.

Guys I need some advice on what carbie parts will be best for me. I am going to get it professionally dynotuned. It is a road ridden bike, no racing. Standard headers. I am not looking to go all-the-way with the power mods, just pull the bike apart once, clean it up, fit some trick bits if they won't have any draw backs, sync the ITB's, get it tuned and enjoy it. No more tearing down every couple of weeks to tweak that and add this; just ride it.
I am interested in the HRC kit, but am hearing conflicting reports on rideability and some even of partially reverting back to stock. Some of these posts however state that the owner hasn't had the bike tuned properly and wonders why it doesn't run right... so they obviously have no idea what they're doing. It is the same story with air box modification - hit and miss depending on who you ask.
What would you recommend? I more or less want the most out of the bike without impacting overall drive ability.
