stantions have to match the forks unless you replace the entrie fork internals (lower legs can swap between models) but the internetals require maching stations.

Scotch bright the legs up, if it starts leaking then put of clear nail polish in any pitting and buff it smooth with some 2000 wet and dry, should hold you over until you get some new stantions.

and as above, maybe a crash or something bent the rad or it was installed wrong and the vibration has caused it to eat away, ive seen an aftermarket exhaust wear away a genny case in 1 ride out after fitting!

lumiweld is a good cheap permnant repair if you can get the metal hot enough and doesnt require welding gear (an oxy propane / o2 torch is useful but ive managed it with a couple of blow lamps and a helper before to good effect) look it up on youtube for a vide on how to use it.

if your planning on replaceing the cover then jb weld it for now and make sure nothing can vibrate / rub against it on re-assmebly.

Thanks, luke is sending a cover up, and from what you say it sounds relatively easy to replace. Nail polish! Excellent :-) will be next on my to do list!

I assume oil can stay in for head cover replacement (since oil stays in for valve clearances?)and assume I need to take the carbs off?

Carbs will need to come off for access, though for the front, you might just need to displace the radiators. No need to drain the oil. It is just 4 bolts and swap.

Thought I would update - have chucked some jb weld high temp on in the interim before replacing the cover - have had the bike going for 30 minutes or so with no worries or oil leaks :-) looking at the marks around the front casing it looks to me like it has been bottoming out heaps, rad hitting it....is that likely to be due to needing the forks setup better/serviced? I have no idea of this bikes history...

Second, float needles/seats leaking - motorcycle mechanic here advised to clean the inside of the seat with autosol/metal polish/paste till no black comin off - done and no leaking now! Keep that one away for a rainy day!

Bike idles perfectly now, even better throttle response than my daily ride! Charging at 14.1v at 5k rpm...

Now just needs someone to check the discs for me, have new tyres, chain and sprockets on their way, then off to be registered we go! I did have to make a bracket for the rear coil though, and forks seem to be holding up okay fool lowing a clean with a seal mate thing (slight bit of crap on the leg but improving, prob just needs another clean) will nail polish when the wife goes out ;-).
