Bit of a dredge, but trying to check my float heights, 1) the two ends of the floats seem to be different sizes/heights? And then how does one measure to the .8 of a mm? My scissors don't paper to be quite that accurate?
And then is it quite normal for them all to be quite far out? Like 8mm or so for nc30 carbs?lastly since I took the carbs off for a clean, the floats seem to be getting stuck as twice now I've gone out to the bike and it's hydro locked, right rear (took plug out and turned over). Fuel tap seals though so not much could have gotten through, do I still need to change oil and filter (was both new!!)?

the floats are different sizes but the heights are the same unless your floats are seriously ruined.. youll probably find if you check them properly they will be the same height.Icemaestro wrote:Bit of a dredge, but trying to check my float heights, 1) the two ends of the floats seem to be different sizes/heights? you use a float height tool or make one with a credit card and an accurate ruler and cut it.

and no its never nomral for them to be out much unless your measuing them wrong or they have been set wrong.
the floats should not stick at all unless they are worn and need to be replaced, either that or they are really set wrong / installed incorrectly.
Filter should be ok if you drain it but probably best to replace the oil.
how are you meausring them?

like this?

Re: Float heights VFR400 NC24
Thanks for that, went through them again today and checked - 3 were out - one under and two over so adjusted as close as I could get. I'm still sure that some of the floats one Bally bit sits higher than the other? Anyway...I think a tiny bit of crap was stopping the float valve from closing as I cleaned the filter bits this time and then filled up with petrol and no leaks. Put on bike and here's hoping for tomorrow!:-p
Ahh ..next time I'll use a box cutter and a square...
It's also really finiky trying to adjust the heights!
Lastly now the bikes revs are hanging as if the choke is on...before it was relatively crisp (though hard to tell as wasn't idling well, needed another clean), It's a stock can, stock airbox with 115 and 118's, screws set to stock...would it then be the floats that are causing it to hang? Or have I missed something (again!)?

118 is too big for an nc24, stock is 115 all rodn of 112 / 115 early 24.Icemaestro wrote:Thanks for that, went through them again today and checked - 3 were out - one under and two over so adjusted as close as I could get. and hanging is proabbyl leaking carb, the rubber isnt sealing right..

Re: Float heights VFR400 NC24
Thanks, sorry to confuse I just hijacked this because of the float heights, I have an nc30. Will check carbs are seated again, but there's only about 1-2mm gap between the rubber and the nob bit on the carbs, and rubbers are new honda oem (learnt this time!) have isolated it down to front left carb, all the needles looked the same though, what would suggest it was worn and needed replacing, or should I replace all 4?
