Nc35 valve clearance out of spec.

Post by violetpop » Sun Oct 26, 2014 11:00 am

Hey all, first post :)

Just picked up this bike, love it... Doing a service and the like and came across this... Does not look good at all. What does everyone think?

Looks like you've only got two just in spec there!
If I was you I would double check your method and results first then if they are correct start swapping shims about, I bet you will have most of what you need already.

Have you done a shim service before? I took several days to do mine and checked them all several times over before I was confident I was getting it right. Or should that be less confident I was getting it wrong? I measured a number a lot wider the first time around.

Just one thing, did you refer to the Haynes manual before doing this? The pic in it showing where to put the feeler gauge is wrong, and people have been known to follow it and get crazy tight figures. The gauge goes between the shim and the rocker, but the pic shows it being stuck between the rocker and the cam if I remember right!

Did you measure those clearances, or did you get that chart with your bike [I keep/give the shimming records for all my bikes]
I measured clearances above and below the rockers and found them all to be within half a thou of each other.
Those figures are so far out that it looks like the tight ones were measured with the cams in the wrong position.
Look at the manual again and set the cams in the correct place to measure.

I cannot explain those loose ones.

Excuse my first post fail... It was late and I lacked detail.

As a car mechanic by trade, I'm confident I measured them correctly (the picture you see is my findings) between the shim and rocker arm, not between the cam. I also had the the Haynes manual close by and lined the timing marks up according to the book. In the name of being 100% I will definitely go over them all once again to be sure.

I plan to race the bike in 2 weeks and as I recently purchased it, I thought I'd check it out and start fresh. I was shocked to find this as the bike ran sweet on track a couple of weeks ago.

What does everyone think? I'm thinking of checking them one more time to be certain and worst case buying a huge stack of shims and pretty much starting fresh. This is also not a bad idea as I'll have shims for future inspections.

Anyways, I'll leave a couple more pics I've taken of the bike. It really is an awesome bit of gear :)

Shims are damned expensive, at least if they come in Honda packets, and there's a very broad range of sizes. If yours really are this far out of spec and most need swapping, I'd be inclined to settle on whatever measurements you are happy with, and then remove each shim and check the size of it. They should have the size on them, but it can wear off, and some people suggest using a micrometer anyway just in case they may be worn to a fractionally different size. Once you know the current gap and the size of the current shim, you can work out what size you need to get the clearance back into spec. You may well find that you already have some of the right size in the engine, just not on the right valve at present. I bought a couple of cheap boxes of HotCams shims that someone wanted rid of when I did mine, however these come in increments twice as large as the ones you will get from Honda, so may not be ideal. Honda ones step up at 0.025mm, while the Hotcams are 0.05mm. The Honda shims start at 1.200mm and end at 2.900 on the parts diagram. If you for some strange reason decided to buy a set of 16 of each size, the bill would be about £7K.... lol

If the TI, T2, and camshaft lines were set correctly, did you measure all the clearances on 1 camshaft rather than in/ex on 2 of them.
In other words, was the piston at TDC on Comp or Ex stroke when EX clearances were measured.
