How to fit a 3TJ airbox?

Post by Drunkn Munky »

Ok I dont care if I sound like a dumbass but im at breaking point with these poxy airbox rubbers, just acquired the 4th set of 2nd hand airbox rubbers that came off a recently running bike and I still cant get a good seal between the carbs and airbox :twisted: admittedly the rubbers dont look perfect but surely if they just come off a bike they should go back on without to much hassle???

Its as if you cant put enough force on the box to get the front of the rubbers far enough down and the only thing I can come up with that might possibly be causing this is the pull cable for the throttle that I have running across the top of the frame cross member, ive tried running it underneth but its not a good fit and hinders the throttle operarion so can someone confirm weather the cable is meant to run above or below the frame cross member?

DM; I cannot state definitely for the 3TJ as I don't have one BUT;

If the rubbers have been off the carbs for more than a few weeks they WILL be tw*ts to put back on; the barstools shrink.

Can you not split the airbox and put the bottom half on the carbs so as to stretch the rubbers back out.
Once they have been on for a few hours they will take their original shape, especially if the motor is still hot..Then remove and screw the top back on the airbox. (Yamaha were not doing any favours by having the screws on the underside.)I think you have to rotate the rubbers to get the alignment correct anyhow.

The throttle cables on the 3EN2 have to be in the exact correct position to allow the airbox to remain on and not bind the twistgrip. I imagine the 3TJ to be the same. (fussy bastard things)

Boris will know the cable route.

It's odd but I don't have a problem with 3TJ rubbers, the 1WG are always difficult but not the TJ's.

Can't remember precisely if you put the front locating bolt into the screen brace, locate the air box and do up the rubbers then do up the locating bolt.

Maybe :o

One of mine is a bitch (4DX) - the only way I could get it to seat properly on top of the carbs was to take the carbs off and tighten the airbox down before fitting the carbs back on! I have 2 other 3TJ's and they don't have any problems with the airbox at all.

The top throttle cable on all of mine runs over the top of the bar you mentioned ;) so I assume that is the correct fitment for them - the other routes underneath.

Ive tried the putting lower of the box on only and that doesnt really help, I did consider removing the carbs and doing it that way so I'll try that next cheers for the confirmation.
