Early shock rebuild ?

Hi I had an early type shock lying around
So I decided to rebuild it.
I've stripped it and obviously need to fit a schrader valve so I can
Re-gas it, however there seems to be a spacer about 2ins from the top of the
Shock that the point of the piston locates into that doesn't seem to want to come out.
Am I ok to drill and tap the top of the shock with it still in place?

That sounds like the secondary piston to keep the gas away from the oil. I think the only way you'll get it out is drill and tap the top and pump it out an clean it up.

Thanks, that's what I thought.
I guess it does the same job as a bladder in a
Remote resovoir, Do you know what grade and quantity of oil it should be filled with?
And how much nitrogen pressure I should put in?

Never messed with rebuilding a shock but a lot of companies say they cannot rebuild the early type nc30 shock, there must be a reason for this?

Even if it can be done the later nc30 shock is much more of an improvent and less trouble to rebuild, might be worth hunting one of them if budget is in order

I've only ever rebuilt my trail bike shocks and usually use fully synth fork oil, 5 or 10 weight depending on how much its worn. How much and pressure is down to each shock, but pressure wise I've always been told to put about 250psi in them, which always seem rather too much!!!!

Page 1-11 of the NC30 manual has a value of 98kPa or 142psi.

The observant (or technical) amongst you will know that 98kPa is actually pretty close to atmospheric pressure (101.3 at sea level is the definition of 1 Bar), so Honda got the maths wrong by a factor of 10!

Or most likely the full stop is omitted as it should be 14.2 psi if the other figures are correct.

However, these both refer to the UK bike which came with a remote resevoir. The shock being discussed above is an 89 JDM shock without remote reservoir.
