Bros wheel fitment

I've recently removed the Bros wheel off my VFR to sort the tyre out. Refitting the wheel I've realised that the holes in the rim are a different pcd to the dowels on the hub. The previous owner has made some slots in the rim so that the rim is not located properly and now driving on the rear disc nuts instead of the dowels. It's obviously been raced like this but it doesn't seem safe to me as the holes in the rim are heavily reinforced whereas the slots made by the previous owner are very weak looking. There's also a homemade spacer between wheel and mating face to stop the 160 tyre catching the chain. So the wheel is only driving on 5mm of the disc nuts. Anyone come across this before? Is this how all bros wheels are fitted?

I've just bought an ex race VFR and this exact same thing has been done. Anyone else seen this done? I don't like the idea of it! So considering fitting the standard 18" back on unless someone says this is safe?

Yes, I`ve come across it plenty of times - the bottom line is that the Bros wheel doesn`t actually fit the VFR axle but you can cram it on there somehow if you whack a few chunks out of it with an angle grinder.

Quite a few racers do it but personally I wouldn`t...

Thanks Rick, I'll run it the once, I'm "parading" it without our club not racing. Then rebuild the bike over winter :)

That home-made spacer plate actualyl puts the front and rear wheels out of alignemnt too.

Best way to fit a 160 tyre is to use Ricks chain spacing kit, i fitted one recently, top quality bit of kit, real easy to fit, gives you chance to check the greasing in the hub and clean everything out too.

Providing you wheel nuts done up properly i doubt youll have too much issue but i wouldnt run it, I have an RVF wheel for 17" tyres.

Of course you should ideally alter the suspenion geometry too to account for the rear 17" wheel being smaller, wonder if thats been done..
