Pulse generator wiring
Can someone please confirm for me the wire colours coming from the mini 6-pin plug from the pulse generators please? It's the wire coming from the right-hand of the crank case (NC21).
Wire colours from an NC24 and NC30 would be useful for the sake of comparison...
My NC21 engine appears to have a mini 6-pin plug whose wire colours don't match the original NC21 loom or the NC21 wiring diagram I have.
Wire colours from this engine are:
Blue - Yellow
Green/Red - Blue/Red
White - White
When I connect this plug to the loom and touch the +VE lead to the +VE terminal on the battery, it sparks like mad and blows the main 30A fuse. I went through and disconnected each part of the loom in turn to deduce that it's the pulse generators causing the problem.

Honda stick to pretty strict conventions with their wiring colours, so although I don`t have a diagram for the NC21, cross referencing to other contemporary models I would expect that if you look closely you will find that one of your White wires actually has a yellow tracer on it and the other has a blue tracer. Assuming this to be so, the wiring should be as follows -
Yellow & White/Yellow - Ignition Pickup 1
Blue & White/Blue - Ignition Pickup 2
Green/Red - Neutral Light Switch
Blue/Red - Oil Pressure Light Switch
Which gives you two other (and arguably more likely) components to check out when looking for your short circuit...

Thanks for your post. I'll double check the wires later, however the two 'whites' do appear to be white without a trace colour. They are all fairly new looking too, although they may just be clean....
Can you elaborate on your point about two other more likely short circuits? Do you mean they're more likely to cause a fault because neutral and oil pressure complete their circuit through ground?

The forum has a search function, if you use it and put in nc21 wiring diagram you will find a link in the first few results, instead of being lazy and asking other people to provide you with information that has been posted many many times before.

And that mini 6 plug only connects the coils to the ignitino box and the neutral / oil pressure switch up... either somethings wired really wrong.. theres some kind of short somewhere or the ignition box is shorting out...

Thanks for your input Neo. I have a copy of that wiring diagram already, as I searched for it when I joined the forum. The information I am asking for is for a few examples of the wiring colours from the pulse generators themselves, as fitted to member's bikes.
As you can see on that wiring diagram, the Red/Blue and Green/Blue wires connect to two blacks coming from the Pulse Generators; the generator cable from my bike does not have two blacks.

It seems the S3H-02 diode in the loom is shagged as it isn't showing any resistance either way. My college electrical knowledge is failing me...can anyone tell me if this might cause the problem I'm having?
I've removed the pulse gen coils and when reconnecting/re-earthing each component, I only get a short when the neutral switch is connected, and on the diagram this is wired to the diode. Any ideas?

The wiring diragram is accurate for the NC21, those are the colors used on the bikes... perhaps its not super clear but the two wires for the oil and neutral switch are green / blue when they leave the 6 pin plug (if you look at the diagram again you'll see the labelllin on the left side of the join shows the wire colours coming from the plug..) until they reach the next join where they change to black.spikenipple wrote:Thanks for your input Neo. The red/blue green blue wires come from the igntiion box to the 6p connector, they connect to a green and blue wires the other side of the 6 pin plug which then run on further to two black wires (the neutral switch and oil pressure switch)
The generator cable from your bike is a completely different cable that has 3 yellow wires in it.. do you mean the pulse generator? then that should have the 4 wires yellow / blue from the pulse coils themsevles then the other two for the nutral and oil pressure swithc.
Can you confirm what colours they are? what color the multi plug is and how many wires in it.
Some pictures may help as the later VFR400Z had a different neutral switch and plug I believe.
The clutch diode is just to stop the neutral light coming on with power from anywhere else in the circit.. I think you have a major short circuit somehwere...

I do mean the pulse generator coils, yeah. I'll get back to it this afternoon and see what I can find from a thorough look throughout the loom (short circuit wise).
The 6-pin plug from the loom is exactly as on the wiring diagram, and looking at the pulse generator wires - having removed them from the engine - the two 'whites' are indeed white/blue and white/yellow but they're faded where they enter the 6-pin plug.

I think I've cracked it, thanks to the member 'magg' over PM. The starter relay is shorting between the green/red wire and...something else. It doesn't short with the clutch diode removed, and doesn't spark with the diode in and the green/red removed from the solenoid 4-pin plug. Time for a new solenoid/relay!
