urgent help - cracked my sump!
Hi guys,
For no reason other than I am the biggest cock in the world I have managed to crack my sump! Feel sooo stupid right about now! What you get for rushing!
3 questions - what is the sump made of? Can it be welded?
And - what falls out when you remove the sump?
And lastly - anyone have a spare sump?
Lol - speedy answers will be appreciated!
Cheers guys

Why when I take something apart and rebuild it; Why do I have so many spare nuts and bolts?

Re: urgent help - cracked my sump!
Can't speak from the vfr point, but I had a cbr600 where 1) the sump had originally been cracked and welded (though mechanic advised this is not recommended)...just oil falls out if you haven't removed it first (so do :-)). When my sump plug was stripped I took the sump off, took to an engineering place to be re tapped and then new gaskets and on it goes. Would probably recommend a second hand sump if you can find one..dead engine maybe?

Re: urgent help - cracked my sump!
where is it cracked?
just drain the oil, take it off and either have it welded up or get a new one to fit. New gasket..bosh.

Re: urgent help - cracked my sump!
Hi, its cracked where the sump bolt goes in - I got lefty loosey and righty tighty confused - muppet I know!
Going to try and get a new one, if it was steel I was going to have a go on the old welder but alas ally welding is out of my remit.
Also thanks to Richyrd5 for the help!
Anyone knoe of one for sale other than flea bay? And what does missing one tab mean? (To me that means avoid!)
Regards,
Richard

Re: urgent help - cracked my sump!
The broken tab is probably one the vertical fins on the edge of the bottom of the sump. Shouldn't be problem - my old engine had one broken tab and was no problem
Thanks

Re: urgent help - cracked my sump!
Are those fins not there simply so the engine sits flat and level if you take it out the bike, and doesn't rest on the sump plug? Or maybe sacrificial so if the bike grounds out on something you scrape a fin rather than risk grinding a hole in the bottom of the sump?

Re: urgent help - cracked my sump!
Yeah I phoned a guy who had one on Fleabay, £25 delivered, but had a 'tang' missing - which from what I can gather is one for the fins - all the bolt holes are there and it doesn't have a crack - Live and Learn - Still cannot believe I did it, was meant to be taking it for its MoT today also!
Now to try and not snap an exhaust stud! (tempting fate) but they ahve been soaked in plus gas regularly for the last couple of months.
Also quick question - standard exhausts are mild steel arent they? which is magnetic, but my exhaust isnt magnetic - I was under the impression it was a standard system? Will post a couple of of photos soon

Re: urgent help - cracked my sump!
Ok, tempted fate
The studs on the rhs cylinder were practically non existent - snapped straight away, And had rusted all the way through - actually really bad.
Then the Lhs decided one was never done up so pretty much fell off, and the others one I may have been a little over zealous, but that snapped as well
All 3 have stud sticking out of the head, but the hrs ones are just rusty stubs, do I try and weld a nut to the end and get them out that we! or are them stud extractors any good? They all have say 5mm sticking out.
Or do I remove the head and send it to a machine shop or alike?
I am normally pretty good at things like this lol really I am
Cheers for the help and advice so far, and long may it continue!

Re: urgent help - cracked my sump!
if you weld a nut on the end there is a chance it will just snap again. I would drill it and use a stud extractor. If this fails, then drill it out and helicoil it. not ideal but will solve the issue.Stitch - NC30 wrote:Ok, tempted fate

P.S. if you use a stud extractor soak the stud with WD40 or the like for as long as you can before you try to take it out.
