Charging issue
Hi all,
I'm thinking I have a reg/rec problem with my NC30 but perhaps someone can give me an opinion.
Over the last few weeks the bikes been showing symptoms of a poor battery when firing from cold, So I've bumped the bike off and its runs fine. Recently now it seems to struggle to hold a charge at all, as in if run it wont crank over very quickly to restart it after standing 30mins.
Now today I fitted a volt meter to the bike so I can keep an eye on it while riding, I'm getting 13v at idle and when riding at a steady 8Krpm it's showing 20v! If I switch the lights on it drops to 13v.
Any thoughts?

Re: Charging issue
If it is like any other 12v motorcycle AND the new voltmeter is correct;
The battery is not holding its charge as 20v in the past has buckled the plates and probably also boiled off some electrolyte. It is a wonder more components have not been damaged such as bulbs/relays/ ignitor !
It is nearly certain the r/r is faulty.
The reason the voltage drops when the lights are on is the regulator part of the r/r is no longer regulating the voltage
and the bulbs are consuming the excess.
How critical is this ?; fix it, like yesterday.!

Here's a good write-up on Rectifier/Regulator function (and dysfunction) that was posted on the Superhawk forum a couple of years ago. Maybe there's some information there that could help you figure out your situation.

Re: Charging issue
As willandrip says, get this sorted asap. NC30's don't go so well when they're on fire. My r/r recently went, iI was lucky and didn't have any other cascade failures.
There's is a charging system health check guide I think Rick O did, it's a good place to start.

Thanks for the replies, keys hidden away until I get this sorted!
I notice Electrix world no longer sell a replacement reg/rec..... so what is the best available "new" option?

Re: Charging issue
good idea
i ended up putting an R6 reg/rec on mine, fairly common upgrade, and can be had for not an extortionate amount of money. Need the 2003-2006 R6 reg/rec i believe, the 5 pin one. you might need to cut your wires back and recrimp them with some new spades, then it's a good idea to make sure the connectors are nicely shielded. spacing on the R6 reg/rec is different, It won't fit on to both the existing bolts without drilling, but i just secured mine to one of the bolts and cable tied the other.
The 3 pins in a row are for the yellow genny wires, and the 2 left are OPPOSITE to the NC one, So where it was Black on the NC one, it is Red on the R6 one etc,you can test this to be sure with a voltmeter...

Re: Charging issue
There are loads of different part numbers for rec/reg units. Problem is there's no rhyme nor reason to the numbering system so it's nigh on impossible to tell which are the nearest equivalent.
The SH640 or 650 fit on the original bracket, at least it does on mine 'cos that was the one that died on me the other day! They're used on loads of Yamaha's so i robbed the one off my other bike.
More recent ones are FH prefixes which have better voltage control but they still shunt the power to earth so work the alternator just as hard. The really new ones switch the alt off progressively - but they're really expensive and huge.

Sorry about that, got called away from the desk for a moment and when I came back I forgot that I hadn't posted the link.

Re: Charging issue
I borrowed a reg/rec and bumped the bike off, charging voltage seems fine now (when run on the spot) I've got another battery coming and a CBR125 reg/rec which is a 5 pin finned type (£10 on ebay posted) so fingers crossed that'll sort it.
Worthwhile mentioning, the reg/rec removed off my bike looked very new, however had no markings at all and was a plain (non finned type) which was potted with resin. I suspect a cheap Chinese unit.
