NC24 - in a few bits - require assistance

Post by Johannes » Sun Jul 06, 2014 12:55 pm

Hi, bought this NC24 recently. A runner with a very quiet engine and no smoke. However, the young chap that bought it about two years ago intended to refurb it but only got as far as taking it all apart, losing most of the fixing screws and putting all the bits in cardboard boxes. I intend on dropping the oil and refilling and would like to get it back together and MOT'd before i decide what more to do. It looks like the forks need an overhaul there's no damping and signs of oil on the sliders.

I was thinking of getting the NC30 Haynes manual. Does anyone have any useful NC24 workshop info?

Any advice/stepbystep instructions on sourcing a service kit for the forks and overhauling the forks? Or would the Haynes NC30 manual assist me in this~? Am assuming it's the same forks on all models?

Also, are these engines designed to run on unleaded? or does the fuel require an additive?

Given the single sided swinging arm. How do you support the bike to work on it. Remove rear hub etc?

Thanks in advance.

I literally just built an NC24 from parts although I haven't done the fork seals yet. It is apparently really easy but you do need some proper tools.

The rear hub has a big nut on it that should have been indented (not sure of the terminology) so it cant come off, loosen it with a small flat screwdriver and a hammer.
Remove the nut (30mm)
The whole rear sprocket comes off.
If you want to go further, there are two 12mm bolts that the end of the swingarm, loosen these bolts and completely remove them.
The whole rear axle will come out the swing arm as long as nothing is in the way. Goes in from the right hand side of the bike.

I think its a waste of money, NC24 is totally different to the NC30, the NC30 genuine Honda service manual in the downloads section, if will give you some idea but forks / brakes / timing / valve clearnaces / pretty much everything is different.

NC24 has different forks to the NC21, and the NC30 has two sets of forks both of which are different to the NC21 and NC24. The NC30 manual wont help at all as its for an NC30 bike. Goto somewhere like cmsnl.com and look at the microfiche to get the part numbers. davidsilverspares.co.uk or lingshonda.com should be able to provide you with forkseals and parts.

Yes, don't put anything in the fuel, most Japanese bikes since the 80s have been designed for unleaded.

buy a single sided paddock stand, if your taking the rear hub out you'll obviosuly need to support the bike from underneath, strap it to a roof bar or something.

axle stands under the footpegs work ok.

Thanks in advance.[/quote]

Evan & Neo. Thanks for you replies, very useful. I'll be taking small steps forward from this point.

Spent some time bolting bits back on this weekend to work out what I'm missing and what's damaged beyond repair etc. and note that I'll need a new nose fairing and front left and right fairings. Have seen some 2nd hand items on ebay. Any guidance on other sources for replacement plastic?? Thanks.
