I know it's been mentioned before but I'm wondering if H4 HID's would work.

I think the problem is the reflector - it's just silver paint, it's not the mirror you get on most headlights. Dipping parallever lamps have a servo motor that moves the bulb in and out or has some form of shutter to dip the light, these have a second fillament like an H4 bulb, but the lamp just doesn't reflect enough light to be much use.

I think the best thing, if you want the original look of the two lights is to replace the lamps. To do that you ned to take the glass off the black plastic or cut it off and repair the headlight after.

and this is the problem with the 3TJ series amongst others, it's an, as you say "truncated triangle" but the projectors inside the front lens (milkybar kid type things) just don't cut it, and leave you with a small orange glow on the ground about 15tf in front of you, as the beam gets further away it gets smaller
with the H4 reflector type lamps the beam gets bigger the further away from you it is and also illuminates a wider field of vision, so you can see the bunnies and deer about to leap onto the road in front of ya
