New to the VFR4R - My tail of two

Well brought one registered VFR and one slightly in parts not registered VFR4,

This will be a journey into space and time with reports and images along the way, my plan for the bikes are:


VFRED - Bring back to a new resotered state trying to keep as close to original as possible

VFRLUE - Track bike to attack the apexes with


So far I have done an oil change on the VFRED and lubed the chain, they tyres are cactus and square and it feels like I'm riding on wood, very hard and slippery but I dud a burbs bash and she held up okay,

only major drama is the gear box is so hard to shift gears I think its something internal? the clutch leaver has been adjusted out as far as it can go and at the lights its so hard to find natural?

Can anyone offer any advice before I send it off to a mechanic, it will be there hopefully next week getting its new tyres fitted but if there is anything I can look at in the mean time I would love to know.

Gearbox shouldn't be stiff but it might be worth a check of the linkage , all the nc's I have had have always been a pain with finding neutral

NC30s can be a pain in the arse to get into neutral sometimes, it is a bit of a knack you learn.

Try a slight b;ip of the throttle as you are trying to select neutral - that normally does the trick ;)

As the lads said it's a characteristic on nc30s you have to get used to I have had several and some are better than others in finding neutral.
You could in the meantime check that the dots align on the gear change shaft and knuckle which helps a little as some folk move the spline position to adjust the pedal when it should be adjusted on the rod ?
Fresh oil helps also.

Thanks guys,

Done the fresh oil thing and not much help there, it is very stiff in changing gears while powering on the gas?

I also am looking for aftermarket fairings but the same ones to no avail, there is every other colour scheme out there just not mine and its more for a freshen up and so I can get my stock faring's restored....

I checked the rear tyre today and the chicken strips are a lot thinner, scary thinner as I was trying to keep it upright as much as possible as the tyres are gone, should have my new set fitted early next week, cant wait!!

an I move into my new workshop this weekend coming!! cant wait!!!

Is that fully synth oil? No need to use it unless your planning on long intervals between oil changes, semi-synth is fine just change it regularly.

Honda OE filters are also fine to use too and often cheaper than aftermarket parts.

As for neutral, yes its difficult on many nc's. if your stationary, put it into 1st and blip the throttle to 2-3000 rpm while lifting up the lever slightly and it should go in, if your rolling upto a stop down to first with clutch in and lift up slighlty and it should go in.

Shoudlnt be hard to shift between gears though, check the linkages are all ok adn not bent. anything worse and it could be an internal problem, which will be pricey to fix.

There are punch marks on the the gear shift linkage and the output shaft, check carefully that the 2 are lined up properly otherwise it will make shifting difficult.

just an update, I have fixed a massive fuel leak from the carbies and have just received my after market fairings yet to be fitted, these are the stockers int he pic below:

any way next step is getting the wheels and a few extra bits powder coated for the road VFR


next on the cards is suspension WTF do I do here? there are so many views/options its insane?

I just want the best bang for buck, Im happy to spend approx. $600.00AUD on a refresh or am I dreaming?


Please any help would be much appreciated

Best budget option is a Rick Oliver fork spring upgrade kit for the front and a rebuild of the standard rear shock.

i have found gear change stiff on some NCs, mainly from cold, so removed the entire linkage and fitted a reversed lever from VFR750 or similar type, the change pattern remains the same.
