NC29 - Changing Oil - Can I remove just the lower faring?

Hiya all.

1st time I've done this on the 400! :grin:
(I use to do servicing on 1996 CBR600f, including balancing carbs etc.)

Can I remove just the lower side fairings, to get to the sump plug and oil filter?!

The Haynes manual says to remove the mid fairings, then the lowers for some reason. Are there any annoying plastic lugs that I need to look out for, and not snap if I try to just force off the the fairing lowers?

If you undo the drain plug with out removing the fairings - which I think you can - drain the oil then you can just reach in and wrench the filter off. Its a bit of a tight squeeze but can be done.

Put some old rags under were the filter is, a small amount of oil will drop out.

Then just fit the new oil filter and refit the drain plug and refill.

I cant remember removing any fairings on my bike.

To remove the belly pan you do need to remove the mid section as there's 2 bolts on each side holding the bellypan on which are hidden by the mid section

Thanks for the tip Gullarm,

I may do that in future, when get the knack, and know the stuff will come easily of next time

For my 1st time though, I'll take the fairings off - I can guess I will get oil splattering everywhere!

I thought that might be the case!

For future reference, is there a work around I can put in, to avoid having to undo the bolts each time?

Thats the problem with sportbikes, a five minute job turns into an hour due to fairing removal. If you have a decent oil wrench you might be able to get away with just removing the mids but I generally remove the lot, mids, vee and lowers as my brute force method with hammer, driver and hands generally require space. It also lets you check the bike over while unclothed.

I always leave as much as possible well alone - especially on these older bikes.

The less you have to remove the less that can go wrong, stuck bolts and misaligned fairings does not make a happy biker and having faring's leaving your bike at high speed is no fun either.

If you can get away with it don't remove it.

That is a good point Gull Arm.

My 1996 CBR600's farings got really brittle and started cracking bit more each time i had to remove them, near the end before I sold her. (This is even taking into account that I got really good at removing them!)

I've started some new posts on this subject! 8)
