4dx cdi problems again
Hi, I managed to get my bike on the road after its been off for 5 years. It came with a faulty cdi unit so I replaced this with a 2nd 4dx unit which was all ok. Then I found I had a fault on the indicator circuit which I got round by running a spare cable. Anyways I took her to work a couple of times, 34 mile round trip and all was well but on Monday I went out with my fair lady on the back, very brave of her by the way lol as I've not ridden for 12 years and she's never been pillion before. Now after about 25 miles the indicators packed in then she wouldn't start so I bumped her but 100 yards down the road it lost all power and we had to jump off as the battery was about to blow. I've since traced the fault to the rectifier. My question after this essay is does anyone know if anyone repairs cdi's as it's fried this one, or does anyone have a spare they're selling. Thanks for reading

Re: 4dx cdi problems again
That's a bit crap - the reg rec must have been over charging. I take it you've changed the Rg Rec and battery, now it turns over but won't start ???
A 3TJ cdi will be cheaper than a 4DX, maybe look for an ebay auction with a low start price ?

Re: 4dx cdi problems again
Cheers Boris, forgot to say I've got a spare 3tj unit and reg rec and battery on order. The only difference between the units is the 4dx has a single red/green wire while the 3tj has a triple wire plug. I'm guessing I just connect the single wire to the one on the 3tj unit ?

I think the connections are the same but the amount of wires is different due to the top speed restriction on the 3TJ. If your bike is a 4DX you'll find the 3TJ cdi will restrict it.
You might be lucky and find a fuse has gone rather than the cdi itself.

Re: 4dx cdi problems again
Make sure the rectifier has a VERY good earth and is able to get airflow.
Hopefully you have got an upgraded unit. R6 type ?
The originals are shunt type that cause loads of grief (as you have found) if not grounded and cooled.
The extra wires are for the speed restriction circuit (not fitted to 4Dx ) that's why that unit is a bit harder to come by.
( Folk use the 4Dx unit to derestrict the 3TJ; speedwise)
It is a TCI unit not a CDI.
Don on the FZR Archive site (USA forum) repairs them = costs about $100 US if I recall.
Probably cheaper to just replace over here.... the 400 units are rarer in US ;so worth repairing.
BDK derestrict them in UK so in theory should be repairable...... but costly !
The bits that blow are not expensive... its the knowledge where the cost is .

Oops no I didn't realise I could use am r6 one, which model out of interest. I've had a look at the cdi board and there's definitely at least one diode burnt out, I've tried to source these before without luck so I mite try a TV enigmas similar as a component is just a component and they'll have the gear to test everything. I'll let you know how I get on and thanks for your replies.

I wouldn't worry to much about the 3tj vs the R6 reg rec, they don't go that often

You might pick up something from this ;

EDIT: Hogdigerdy Dog had a thread on using the later r/r . ON THIS FORUM.
Keep updates of the TCI repair.
