Charging system check with non standard parts
Electrics have never been a strong point of mine so thought id run it by the experts first, Ive just fitted the following parts,
GSXR genni
Unknown reg but looks decent and both the reg and genni came from a running NC
Lithium Ion battery, LIPO07C
Im yet to connect any lights up but these are the charging readings im getting,
Ign off 15.3V
Ign on 15.2
@ 5.5k RPM 16.4
Seems a little high to me but i assume with lights fitted and on this will drop slightly but my main concern is am i over charging the Lithium battery?
NC35 BTW

Re: Charging system check with non standard parts
ive found lithium batteries can take a higher charge, have you checked the manual for the battey?
throw a normal lead acid on there and see what it charges at

I'll see if i can find any detail online for the battery, its the one that rick sells.
Dont think i have a normal battery here but might be able to borrow one later today

I'm using Ricks battery on a normal setup, with his Reg/rec, to be honest didn't even check the output of the new alternator, just fired her up and off we went!!

Yeah the only reason I wanted to double check was that none of the kit im using apart from the battery is brand new, IIRC matt all your kit was new wasnt it?

Re: Charging system check with non standard parts
My reasoning behind it was that I know Mori Man has a LI battery on his ZXR and that outputs a higher charging voltage than a normal lead acid did (He has some yoshimura digital gauges that monitor battery voltage) Its aroudn 15.2 running I belive.
Only speculation but maybe there is a lower reistance on a LI battery or some other characteristic that causes the charging voltage to be slightly higher.
He's had that battery about 2 years now I reckon and its still running fine so I guess it hasn't caused any issues, but double checking never hurt

Yeah lipo batteries have a higher nominal voltage than lead acid battery, there usually about 3.7 volts per cell so a 4 cell battery would be 14.8v, so I'd say yours is about right.

Re: Charging system check with non standard parts
I think my multimeter is on the way out, got the lights connected up and checked the voltage with ign off and its now reading over 17v, checked the battery on my Mito which is a brand new lead acid battery and that shows 17v too. My only concern now is that when i rev it to 5.5k the voltage is slightly lower than it is at tickover. Time for a new multimeter i think.

Re: Charging system check with non standard parts
Ok well I changed the battery in the multimeter and it seems to be working properly now although im still not sure the charging system is working right,
Ign off 13.16v
Ign on 12.73v
Tick over 14.05v
5.5k rpm 13.90v
Its clearly charging but why the drop in voltage from tick over to 5.5k rpm? One thing probably worth mentioning is the live feed from the reg has a 15 amp in line fuse, this is how it was on the bike the reg and genni was removed from so I left it there.
