Rebuild time (again)

My 3tj has been sitting in the bike shed for 5-6 years now with a poorly engine. Lack of time and money prevented me doing anything with it, but now I have the time and the money to do something with it so it has been dragged into the shed for some much needed TLC.
600cc motor will be getting slotted in, single seat conversion and it will be treated to a full respray, not sure on the colours yet, but will be a race rep scheme.



Engine will be getting cleaned up before fitting, plenty of refreshments on hand.



Been off the road far too long. Will see the road this summer though, and hopefully Knockhill for a trackday.



Will have to get busy reading the 600cc engine thread to see what I'm letting myself in for.

Its taking me an absolute age to do mine but then again I did mess about with the engine a bit.
Today I roughly cut the engine mounts

Was working late tonight so haven't gotten a great deal done tonight. Removed the seal & panels, rear sub-frame, nosecone and the exhaust.

Had a bit of a disaster with the headlight, knocked it of the workbench and smashed the glass, so that's the first thing on the "to buy" list on the whiteboard.

First job tomorrow night is to get the benches cleared up and dig out my storage boxes, as this would have prevented the headlight from getting knocked off the bench.

Second job is to get some carpet laid around the bike, as the concrete floor is not very comfortable on the old knees, and might have saved the headlight.

Third job will be to go and buy a docking station for the Ipod, as I ripped the buds out of my ears countless times ricking the cable on bits of the bike.

I got a old pc wired to a even older car stereo on me garage, stream loads a net radio

I have my father's wireless from out of the potting shed.
O the joys of listening to ; The light programme, Luxembourg and the new fangled VHF.

A friend of mine collects those old wireless valve radios, I'm amazed he hasn't set fire to his flat!
That's just reminded me he repaired my old getto blaster about 15 years ago and it's still going strong.
DAB? IPods? bah!

I ended up getting a Sony SRS-BTX300 Bluetooth speaker. It's run off a rechargeable battery so I can take it anywhere I want and don't need a 240v power point.
Seems pretty good sound quality, but could be a bit louder. Pretty sure my neighbours think its loud enough as he asked me if I had gotten a new sound system last night.



Its's typical that the very moment I start a bit of a project, work gets busy and I end up working loads of overtime. Good for the paypacket and buying lots of new shiney bits, but not good for progress on the bike.
The only thing I seem to have made progress in is making a dent in the beer collection, nearly down to my last case. Trip to Tescos at the weekend to stock up is on the cards.

Been checking the valve clearances on the new motor tonight, but I couldn't find my good set of feeler gauges so couldn't get exact readings as the one I did find jump in 0.05 increments instead of 0.01
All the inlets are pretty even, at a very loose fitting 0.10 or a pretty tight 0.15. I would say probably 0.13 to 0.14
The exhausts are all around 0.25, with a couple that are a loose 0.20.
All within tolerance, but I'm still debating if I should re-shim them all now or crack on getting the engine fitted to the bike. Maybe I should wait until I find my other set of feeler gauges before I make my mind up what to do.
Any thoughts on how long before they will be out of tolerance?

If you don't run the engine they should be fairly static
You probably won't be riding on the redline everywhere so good for 10k miles maybe.
