Laying up an RVF ; advice on fuel tank please

Post by racingt »

Hi guys,
I'm laying up my 20,000 k immaculate RVF for three years till I have more time to spend with her.
Don't want the tank to rust.
Should I fill her with fuel, or leave it empty?
Thinking full of fuel will stop oxygen forming rust, and know I will have to drain in three years, but that's ok.
Advice please,

Phil

I'd fill it.

I might also add some 2T oil to the mix, no idea why, just might help protect the tank better is my thinking.

Or fill it with diesel, just remember not to try to start it!!! lol. I'd take the carbs off aswell and wipe inside the floats with engine oil.

Petrol, with a little Castrol R. Then if I forget what's in it, at least it will smell good!

for 3 years

i would take the tank off and drain it , then put in some oil and roll it all around and put it somewhere safe where
i could roll it around every few months

drain the carbs

That depends on whether or not it's a good clean one that's currently roadworthy, or a good clean one that's been stored and now needs to be recommissioned with that hope that no gremlins have set in... ;-) Unless the prices skyrocket, I don't think there's a lot of point in doing this myself, unless you have no need for the bike now, but want to use it three years hence. I don't think it will make you any money, but who knows what the market might do.

You know what, screw that for a plan. Just started her, sounds like heaven, I'm gonna ride for the next three years. Too good to lay up.
Selling that damn dirt bike tho....
