Indicator Issue - RVF400

Post by jjkilpatrick1 »

Hi All,

Hoping that someone can help, I have an indicator issue on my RVF400. When I engage the left indicator both indicators work without issue, however when I turn on the right indicator all indicator lights flash (Left and Right), they still flash at the normal rate. I thought the switch might be at fault so I took it apart and cleaned it with some WD40 (Also removed some corrosion inside), this made no difference though.

Hoping that someone can point me in the right direction, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have original bulbs or aftermarket led indicators fitted?

They are after market indicators but I don't think they are LED.

You need to check.

LED's use much less current than the standard incandescent bulbs. The amount of current that can pass through the dash indicator bulb (completing the circuit between left and right indicator sides) is enough to light LED bulbs.

2 solutions if you have LED's: pull the dash indicator bulb out (not a great solution), or install a diode in indicator wiring at the dash as in the below diagram.

Thanks for the reply Cammo, however I had a look and confirmed that they are not LED indicators. It's also worth noting that it was working perfectly before, it started happening during a ride home.

Id take the switch off and bridge the wires in the switch connector block (switch removed) manually with a piece of wire to doublly isolate the switch.

If there still all flashign then theres a big short somewhere.

Sounds like its the switch though as thats the only place where all the indiactor wires meet up.

I took your advice Neosophist and tried connecting the wires on the switch block and the issue still occurred, I even tried the wires on the plug where the switch connects to the wiring loom, still no go. So it seems that the switch is not the problem.

Any others ideas? if it's a short any idea where I should be looking?

Thanks for the help so far.

hey.

The way to try it, perhaps im not clear..

disconnect the switch and short the pins in the block from the loom.

if its still doing it then its really odd.. as if the wires must be melted together somewhere to light them all

Good news it's fixed!

I tried what you said in regards to the switch and found that wasn't the fault, which I'm glad you suggested that as I probably would of brought a new switch!

It turns out it was a wiring issue.

Thanks for all your help.
