Source of an Annoying Oil Leak

Post by magg »

For some time I have been looking for the source of an annoying oil leak from the the left side of the engine. My experience may be of use to others suffering the same problem. Appears that the O ring that seals the water pump to the crankcase was the culprit.

Originally suspected the the same or the sump gasket but a change of O ring appears to have worked. Easy to change, no need to remove hoses etc, just undo two bolts, pull water pump change O ring and reinsert pump.

Took off my fairing..lo and behold, i have this problem you guys speak of, the oil is like a greasy stickish consistency right? anyway it's been there over a year lol and i just haven't paid much attention to it till i read this thread, I'll change the O-ring and hopefully it'll be all good.

oh and no need to remove hoses? so i don't have to drain the coolant and detach the hose as it says in the manual?

Mine was a leak that drippled onto the fairing and then the ground. Worse when using the sidestand and the oil level was at the full mark. Using a torch I could see a wet oil film running down from the junction of the water pump and the cranckcase. I had no problem pulling out the water pump without disconnecting the hoses.

So i thought this was the same, till i realised not only do i have that oil leak (i just wiped it up), I have this sticky grease stuff next to the waterpump that i can't wipe up, looks like grease gunk being flung off the chain and just rolling down the sides. But it's a lot, it can't possibly be from the chain.

Looks like chain lube to me, your chain lube may not be as sticky as some or has not dried sufficiently after application before riding.
