Headlights wont work!?

Post by Cal Walker »

Hi guys,

After testing my lights work in the garage the other day, all of a sudden my headlights don't work on the dipped beam.

I turned them on and off a couple of times with the ignition turned on without the bike running, then as I went to turn them on again I get no dipped beam!? I thought that I may have blown the bulbs or something so I ordered some new bulbs (60/35w as its a jap NC30) when I took the old bulbs out, the left one was the correct bulb and the right someone had put a 60/55w in it!

I have new correct bulbs in, my sidelights work, and when I press the button for main/high beam they work, but they still don't work on dipped beam!?

If anybody can get back to us on this it would be great, as my MOT has now expired and with no lights working I cant put it in for it! :(

Regards.....Cal

Normally a 55/60W bulb will not fit the headlamp without modifications, anyway the high wattage bulb may have damaged the handlebar light switch. The white wire coming out of the switch should be low beam power, if you do not get 12v at this point with low beam selected then most likely a switch problem.

You would then need to disassemble the switch and you may be able to repair it, otherwise a replacement.

The switchgear will likely have got a touch knackered - strip it and clean it...it might fix it. It might not...

The starter switchgear or the LHS switchgear? I have the same problem on an RVF400.

This is going to sound stupid but how do I get the Switchgear off? Do I need to pull off the grip or remove the clip on handle? I have a replacement SG I can try.

To try another switchgear, you just need to unplug it (on the left side of the front head) -- no need to remove it for that.

I have an identical issue with my VFR NC30 (I've a thread on it here). I stripped the switch and cleaned it, no luck. The indicators won't work anymore either so it all points to the switch being knackered. I started a second thread on where to buy a new one, no replies yet.

Shigsy, the turn indicator and headlight light switches are completely independent, mayb your indicator problem is a failed relay. When you say you have the identical issue, do you mean your low beam headlights do not work?
