David Silver spares lists stock for needle jet P/N 16165-MR8-600, could be used to check some dimensions. The other needle and needle jets have been discontinued and are unavailable.

does anyone know a sure fire way to check if the part the needle goes into (needle jet?) is worn? is there a size we can check?

Forgive me, old age is catching up, just remembered I have some dimensions for various NC30 needles. Problem is I do not know hot to upload a pdf. Can PM to anyone who wants a copy.

Checked last night and the oem needles are definitely in the right carbs also the emulsion tubes too. By "needle jets" do you mean the emulsion tubes? I can patch up the holes I put in the tray easy enough and will give the filter a good blow out with compressed air. Have Rick Oliver road needles on the way.
What about putting the K&N filter on without the holes in the tray would that be good? I thread I read on here about the Chrysler mod and people seemed to be quite positive about it.

Just got my rick oliver needles they are 2mm longer than the standard. The needle length is 45mm and slightly thicker towards the end too.

Fact is that some sets of carbs will be pretty knackered after 20+ years of use and abuse.
Parts wear, some can be replaced (e.g. needle jet) but not all parts which affect the fuelling. I reckon Rick might be able to sort you out with new needle jets if you think they may be worn.
If Rick's needles don't fix your issue then I'd be looking for another good used set of carbs (they're cheap enough) instead of applying band-aid fixes to this set (it will still be a bonus to use Rick's needles in another set so no loss there). Just my thoughts.

Worth trying I guess, I did get a set but they've seen better days, bought them because they came with a large selection of jets and needles to try. Whether they're viable, who knows! At least I can compare bits on them for wear.
