Rear caliper pad retaining pin stuck

Post by lutorm » Wed Jul 17, 2013 5:24 am

I managed to round the head, even after 24h of PB blasting and using a hot air gun...

What's the best way to get it out now? I can imagine either trying a bolt extractor in the head, or cutting the end of the pin off the back, taking out the pads, and then trying to get a purchase on it from the back. I hope the threads in the caliper are salvageable...

it has a cap on top of another bolt - so have you destroyed the cap or the bolt?

Drill it....

The actual pin. The cap came off without a problem.

Will try an extractor.

How did you get purchase with it? Did you just jam the screwdriver into the edges of the hex hole?

Well, but all I have is a round hole now. Even if I could find a round bit, I doubt it would do much good...

If you want to get a bit brutal with it you can do what many people have done with good effect and that is to get a Torx (star bit) that slightly bigger than the hole you have and hammer it in then use that to get it out.

Torx bit! Brilliant! That'll be my next try.

I cut the back off the pin, got the pads out, and then gripped that. No success - the pin just twisted.

I also tried the bolt extractor. It just chewed up the hold I had drilled without budging the bolt. (The bolt material seems quiet soft...)

I guess next is to pull out the propane torch. I'm replacing the seals anyway.
