rear manifold smoking? And gaskets.

Post by talcumpowderbut » Tue Jul 09, 2013 7:04 am

Ok over last weekend got the bike running but then realised when sat idling for around 20 seconds. There would be a small amount of smoke appearing from the rear manifold. Up from the engine. Did not get a chance last time to swap out gaskets but will do that now. But my question is.

Does anyone else get this problem? Will it sort itself out after properly warmed up? And possibly when i put new gaskets in could i put a small amount of exhaust gaskets sealant in there to. And i amcorrect in thinking its the silver thicker gaskets which fit inbetween the manifold and engine? sorry for all the questions. cheers connor.

Hay connor, its the brass ring type of gasket (the same as the front) that joins the manifold to the engine. I think the gasket between the manifold and the rest of the exhaust that has the thicker type gasket you are talking about, a smearing (just a smear) of gasket sealant / maker can't be a bad thing. But its odd that its smoking. Sometime if you have been working on the exhaust the oil from your hands can smoke and burn off the exhaust when it gets hot for the first time or so. Are you sure that its the exhaust leaking and not something burning off the outside of the exhaust?

A leaking cam cover gasket will allow oil to run down onto the exhaust manifold to burn off when it gets hot.

hi guys thanks for the replys. appreciate it. have the manifold of now and it looks and smells possibly more like oil. and there is a small amount of what looks like oil up at the gasket. i will try and get a picture up tonigjt when im on the computer. But what does it take to change over to a new cam cover gasket. is it a difficult process. im not ruling it out to be the problem as of yet. just want to know what it will take if it is the gasket. Thanks alot connor.

right i reckon its unburt fuel. being that it was on the pipe on the manifold. which leads to the cylinders which was not firing. i also did not have the manifold fully tight. i may just be hoping for the best option here at the moment. but i will give it a good clean up and wire wool. And get her all ready to try again.
