Bike died on me

Post by hksooie1 »

Out on the nc30 the other day and after about 20 miles or so, bike starts to misfire a bit and then cuts out. Pull it to side of road and try starting it again. nothing, no noises coming from solenoid etc. Any ideas?

Is the battery flat? If so, charge it up and try to start...If it starts and runs, it could be the regulator quit working.

What have you tried so far? Did you manage to get it going to get it back? Had anything similar before, doing anything different before it happened?

With only half the story it will take twice as long to get to an answer.

Any ligths on it?

If its totally dead check the battery voltage if you havent already.

If that looks normal then id start with the main fuse.. i had one that had a split leg so it was loose and was causing all sorts of electrical gremlines, i never removed it to check it until id ran out of all most all ideas and thats when i found the issue.

Just had time to check it over since it happened. Had to recover it with AA.checked all fuses, all ok. Battery showing 11 volts. When turn key in ignition light coming on ok. When hit starter button, nothing, no clicks or noises. Had a look at reg/rec terminals, no signs of any burnt terminals etc. with regards battery, put it on optimate and going straight to orange just below green on indicator panel. All connector etc look in place and no signs of any burning etc.

Battery charging up okay on optimate. Problem would appear to be fried connectors where alternator connects into loom. Deep joy! Not!

That could indicate knackered reg/rec, battery or even generator.

Get it all tested with a multimeter.

My next question would be, is it an easy job just to replace the wiring going from the connector to the alternator? I reckon the reg/rec is ok and its the wiring going into the connector from the alternator thats just had its day

Another thought, rathernthan having to replace the connector block and all connections. Could I remove it from the equation and solder and shrink wrap the yellow wires then no more connector problems.

You can do what you want with it - A direct run from alternator to the reg rec is a good idea - but when one of them fails you are cutting wiring once more.

you do have to test each item - and it may be that each of them is fucked = ballache.

replacing the connectors when you have a duff battery and a weak genny alongside a failing reg rec is a recipe for getting stranded somewhere again.
