Good idea, bit of health competition is always good for the consumer! Its unlikely they will be able to though to be honest as electro-luminesant back-lit dials are quite a far cry from a piece of plastic which has some printing on it.Neosophist wrote:I'm gonna contact re-dial and see if they can do something similar over here in the UK and try and get an estimate, see if we can get some competition (lower prices) between firms :D
I wouldn't really worry too much about sending a credit-card number as plaintext over the internet, the chances that somebody is sitting there sniffing packets to capture this information is really low, even lower that they'll capture the rest of the information needed to use it.
Wouldn't worry too much eh? Thats all very well, until it happens to you - we have locks on our doors for a good reason. Im sure if you left the door unlocked you would be fine for months, maybe years - but when you do get done over, you know exactly why.
Thats their problem not ours, at the very least we can make an informed decision as to what we are doing when conducting business transactions online, as when *we* hand out our details online it then becomes *our* problem - just trying to bring that knowledge to my fellow nc30 riders tis all; What you do with it........Neosophist wrote:you'd be surprised how many 'large' organisations that use an encryption scheme such as SSL to receive your details have a rather lax attitude to what they do with your details once they have them.

It'd sure be your problem if the company you traded with lost / sold / used your credit card details.kave wrote:Thats their problem not ours, at the very least we can make an informed decision as to what we are doing when conducting business transactions online, as when *we* hand out our details online it then becomes *our* problem - just trying to bring that knowledge to my fellow nc30 riders tis all; What you do with it........Neosophist wrote:you'd be surprised how many 'large' organisations that use an encryption scheme such as SSL to receive your details have a rather lax attitude to what they do with your details once they have them.
I do see your point though and wasn't trying to discredit what you say, SSL is nice, and it can be helpful at times especially in an environment where somone reading your credit card details
is more likely to happen, such as when using a shared LAN full of angry geeks that don't like you and who know your shopping online.
I was meerly pointing out the fact that just becuase a company doesn't use SSL isn't necessairly a bad thing, there is much more to consider. The actual odds of somone scanning all the pieces of your credit card details is extreemely low. It's far more likely that any fraud that you will encounter is through the modern day 'phishing' attacks or the company that has your details being hacked and / or loosing your details...
And as for paypal, there have been many high profile cases of them loosing peoples credit-card numbers, bank details accounts etc etc through sheer incompetence. (you only have to look at http://www.paypalsucks.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) for a pretty dim view on them.
Oh and finally a good locksmith with the right tools can pick a standard 5 pin tumbler lock in around 8 seconds..
Back to the original thread, i've emailed re-dial see what they say, if not i've found another american company who do identical dials for slightly less money, came across them when browsing a vfr750 website, so i'll email them now too ^_^

I dont quite understand what you are trying to get across, anyway a technical discussion about whether SSL is neccessary or not is neither here nor there, all I will say is there is a reason why all banks and all sensible business transactions use it.
Any how we need more in on this group buy ffs!!!
Bump.

Re: new dials group buy..
I set this group buy up a long time ago, back when I was trying to make the stock gauges EL glow. Now I have custom SPA gauges, so I don't need them, but it would be nice to see this group buy go through.
