Suspected knackered fuel tap advice needed-NC24
Just finished checking and adjusting carb float heights installed carbs and tank and switch tank from off to reserve and fuel starts pissing out everywhere from one side of carbs at front. I removed tank and fuel flows relatively freely from fuel tap on both reserve and on with no vacuum applied to tap. I assume this signifies a knackered fuel tap ?? Advice welcomed.

Not really.
You could have the tap modified to bypass the vacuum.. its a common mod.
As long as its not flowing on off it will be ok if you remember to turn it off.
You have a stuck float on your carbs.. tap the bottom of the carbs with the handle of a screwdrive a few times until it jars the stuck float free and your carbs should stop leaking.
If they dont stop then perhaps the floats / float needles are not in properly.

Hmmm I do wonder if it has been modified to not need vacuum hose. If it has what should I do with spigot blank it off with something or leave open. I will have a look at floats but they should be ok as I adjusted all float levels this morning.

You have adjusted them but they are leaking now right?fasttom wrote:Hmmm I do wonder if it has been modified to not need vacuum hose. I deleted your other thread as it isnt necessary to have two open with the same issues in them.
If they were not leaking before then it is most likely you have a stuck float valve, its common, or you haven't put them together, adjusted them incorrectly (how did you adjust them? and to what)
Do what I said and tap the cabrs with a screwdriver handle a few times (with some force but not trying to break them)
There is no need to blank the vaccum spiggot off. If it starts to leak fuel from there then most likely the diaphram in the tap has split and will need to be replaced or repiaed (touch and go). It is quite rare but sometimes the diaphram can actually stick open, meaning your tap hasnt been modified its just stuck, its possible for it to unstick and then without the vaccum line it will starve of fuel.
You can leave the vaccum line connected, even with the tap mod in place.
If you really want to find out, I recommend opening the tap and checking the spring is still there and the diaphram isnt split.
With regards to the NC24 and Honda and reliabliilty.
There is absolutbly nothing unlrealiable about the NC24, only the ablility of the people who repair / have repaired the bike to affect how reliablie it will be.
If you buy a 25 year old grey import that has been owned by 20 muppets with no manuals or knowledge and only a hammer for a tool then you can't expect it to be as reliable as when it came out the factory.
If you buy the same 25 year old bike from a grey enthsiast who has maintained it and knows how the bike works then providing you carry on servicing and maintaining it when it is due it shouldnt break down unexpectedly.

Right I did just as advised (don't know where I would be without the advice provided on this site) removed vacuum line and gave the suspect float bowl a few taps with a screwdriver. Started bike up and miracle no fuel leak :) Next problem I notice is that temp gauge goes up incredibly rapidly and after a couple of minutes is off the scale. There is no way water temp is that high after a couple of minutes running any ideas where to start, dodgy gauge, temp sensor (not sure where this is located ?)

have you took the rad cap off and made sure there is coolant in there and its circulating?fasttom wrote:Right I did just as advised (don't know where I would be without the advice provided on this site) removed vacuum line and gave the suspect float bowl a few taps with a screwdriver. usually a bad earth or bad connection to the temp probe, which is behidng the thermostat on the front right of the engine will cause it to go hot straight away.

Coolant has been freshly topped up so I know that isn't the issue. So it may be knackered water pump or temp probe. How co I check the function of the probe ? If it is this that is knackered I assume you need to replace the whole thermostat ?
