Brake seals?

Post by Keny73tj »

Hi
I stripped the brakes down on my 3tj. I removed seals and cleaned then painted calipers. I was wondering if the seals can be re used? Some of the dust seals have seen better days so I'm not sure if I should just replace the whole lot, normally I would but the budget on this project is starting to get out of control! Anyone recommend somewhere to get them from?
What other models share the same callipers?
Thanks Keny

If the seals are in good condition and if you know how old they are then you can make a better decision but these are brakes and no something you want to get wrong

I used Wemoto but they sent the wrong sizes

The dust seals look a bit shagged, no idea how old they are! One half of one caliper was not working at all and at least one piston in the other side not working. Suppose after all the work I've put in to the bike so far I should do the right thing and replace them. Another 50 rips to spend :( I'll get some pics up soon when I get all the parts back.
Didn't get time to send that seat to you Boris but it's packaged up now so I'll send it tomorrow, still need that undertray mate give you £15 for it?

I completely stripped and rebuilt both the 4 pots on my FZR250 3LN about two years ago. All the seals looked good so I reused all the seals. I carefully removed them all from the calipers using a blunted electrical screwdriver. Then scraped all of the white crust from the seal grooves and went round them with a bronze wire brush. Cleaned them out using carb cleaner and wd40. Cleaned all of the removed seals.

When I put them all back together I used copious amounts of red brake grease and covered the seals with it aswell before putting them back in the calipers. When they were all back on I bled the brakes with new fluid until the 'red' brake fluid went back to normal colour.

The brake performance has been great and only just now do I feel like I should be doing it again. I have used the bike in all weathers including snow so they have done well I think!

Think I'm going to get new seals for the front at least, I've gone to the trouble of doing it so might aswell do it proper job.
There was a lot of white shit in mine too got rid of it exactly the same way then painted them with silver calliper spray. They look like new now.

Will do, had a look on Wemoto they where £47 for the front, but they do not state the dimensions just large and small. Don't want to get wrong size so I'll call them to make sure first. There are some cheaper ones on eBay but not sure about the quality!

Try these people they've been very helpful to me and are reasonably priced. They may just do the dust seals if you ask.

Cheers Clanky, called Powerhouse today, very helpful guy. He sorted me out with seals, o rings, bleed nipples, dust covers and banjo washers all for £47 plus £2 p&p
Everything I need to overhaul front calipers. Good job I called him to give dimensions he had a different size listed for my 3tj1. Thanks for the heads up on the girl selling the fairings too, I got the sides and complete rear off her, the paint isn't perfect but will do for now, I've got more panels I can get painted properly at a later date. My main aim is to get on and ride the old girl 8-)
