Fork oil

sorry if this is a stupid question. im busy doing my forks, how many ml's do i need to buy that will be sufficient? Tha haynes states in cc's which i dont understand, will 500mls be enough or must i get 1l?

cc = cubic centimetre. It's the same as a millilitre. 500mls = 500cc

ok cool, thanks. is it neccessary to change the oil or can i just top it up? The seals are leaking so ill def change them

If you are changing the seals (which you certainly should as they are leaking) then you have no option but to drain the fluid. You basically need to strip the forks to get to the seals. It would be crazy to put the old fluid back in after doing all that.

If you want to be extra nice to your bike (or in case they are shagged when you pull them out) order some bushes as well. Quite often you can get them as a set i.e. seals and bushes.

Fork oil isn't mega expensive, so unless it's very new, there's no point in scrimping on oil and reusing it. If you want to be extravagant, you could spend up to about £12 a litre on the stuff. For the sake of three pints of beer, I wouldn't even bother keeping it. Assuming you don't need the bike in a hurry, I'd hold fire on the bushes myself. If they are worn, replace them, but unless they're so bad you can tell before you get the forks to bits, I would wait and see what they are like before ordering them, as all four weigh in at about £32 excluding shipping.

bought all top stuff but strugglin fukt up. caliper, fork pinch bolt and front mudguard all all have a rounded off bolt not budgin. Had to take the whole front off. gonna be a mission to get this done

It can be a total ballache mate. An impact driver and some very good allen key fittings would help I am sure.

this is more of a fuckup than anything. wanted to give the forks a coat of paint but i cant. the one fork has the caliper attached and the other, the caliper, the axle and disc. The caliper bolts look bent, must be from my prang. it honestly doesnt look like these can come off without something like an angle grinder

Nothing a bar of soap wont fix.

Just walk away from it if its getting to you as you will do more damage ....Go back to it with the right tools and be methodical.
