Gearbox playing up

Hey guys,

Last few days my gearbox keeps dropping out of 2nd gear and making the clutch bounce on my foot.

Wondering your thoughts on what order I should go about checking/fixing this.

common fault. worn dogs and gears.
check the gear linkage is set correctly first - there are marks on the shafts to ensure its correct, but 9/10 its box shot
rebuild is the only way or replace the motor

Seems to only do it when the bikes a bit cold as I ride to work but it's only going to get worse i guess...

Would this be something my Haynes manual can guide me through or should I give it to the workshop?

I have the occasional problem with this but i find being more positive with my foot and not releasing the clutch too early helps massively, it is just delaying the inevitable rebuild or replacement though.

Will be much cheaper buying a good used engine rather than stripping the motor down to replace any worn gearbox parts, unless i am mistaken you can replace the selector drum and forks without stripping the motor though so maybe that is an option.

My bike is the same, if I hold the lever up for 5-6 seconds while i release the clutch I find that it eliminates the problem

I have to admit I have a lead foot/hand and love to bang through my gears quickly and its frightening to be smashing through second gear only to have the bike fall into neutral so I might start looking around for a spare motor

It would be nice to pull the motor out and learn more about this bike since its such an awesome toy and would love to give it the tlc it deserves.

The bikes are probably older thatn you..(judging by your lack of mechanical sympathy)

You cannot - so don't - smash it from first to second and expect it to work well The bike has to go through neutral and so it is not the same change as from 2nd to 6th - which you can be a touch more brutal with.

I understand the need to try and be cool and rag it everywhere...but think of the long game - stop killing the gearbox.

Maybe even change the oil, sometimes it helps.

My gearbox likes slipping into neutral when it's due an oil change, starts to feel different too, like clunkier.

I bought my bike so I could ride it, I ride the way I like to and I will deal with the problems that arise from my riding. I can slam from 1st to 2nd if I want to, I never said that that is what I do you simply assumed. Don't be a rude ....

He wasnt really being rude pal, its just most of us dont like to see these bikes abused and neglected, mines been a bit ropey since i bought it and ive put 20k on without any further problems, theres no need to hammer through it when it works just as well if your changing gear properly.
