Throttle cable routing

Post by speedy231278 »

This might sound like (well, is) a stupid question, but exactly what route should the throttle cables take from the bar to the carbs? When I put the bike back together earlier, I routed them over the top of the radiator where the big plastic shield is (I figure it's to stop the cables and rad rubbing together and being damaged), and then along to the carbs. At least, that's what I did, and when I got everything fitted, I found that the throttle wouldn't spring shut. A bit of wiggling the cables about to see if they were getting squashed did momentarily free things up a bit, but not enough to make the throttle return fully, nor with much haste. There wasn't much drag, but enough to overcome the spring on the carbs. Just to add insult to injury, despite little if any extra effort than normal required to operate the throttle, the opening cable promptly snapped before I managed to finish investigating the cause!

From throttle through left hand fork and headstock above bottom yoke over radiator and to carb.

I think that is it.... Anyway make sure your HT leads aren't in the way, mine were once after I put the bike back together half asleep.

Ta. I'll have another look next weekend, when hopefully the new cable will have arrived. Bloody typical that I've been thinking for years that I ought to have a spare! lol

Might it not have been real tight because it was fucked?

Mine seems to use excessive slack when turned to full lock.
IE it really slack when pointing straingt but has no slack when turned.
Is that right or am i going to need to move mine too? xD

No, it was perfectly fine before I had the bike apart. Unless somehow having the carbs off and putting them back on again has done something to upset the return spring, I am sure that something was causing one or both of them to bind. Just sod's law I managed to break the bloody thing while trying to sort it out. I'll get it fixed next weekend.

Not exactly, the cable itself snapped about an inch before the ball at the carb end. Most likely as a result of much opening and shutting of the throttle in quick succession while I was shifting the cables about trying to work out what they were trapped against. Note to self, be gentler next time! It didn't look like there was any pre-existing damage, which is more normal, it just went bang.
